I just checked my guestimate for the 40 year screencap you posted, it's a yield of +9% per year (and there was about 3.8% on average btw.).

So yeah, with a dow index, if you got 300k you can't buy a house, and if you wait 20 years you're still below 700k and probably the house price is through the roof too.
