If holiday performance is trash then its definitely bad. $KSS high was 62.74 in 2020, it ended at 28.22 last market close. Mutual funds aren't bad. Most of the ones that track the S&P are merely 0.02 to 0.03 fee wise. Translates into 2.00 to 3.00 a year per 10k invested. ETF's are the same (most of them). So unless your funds are totally shat your looking at 2 to 3 per 10k no mater what. This means that honestly by the time the fee starts to really impact you your total investment worth would be fuck huge and by that point you won't even notice it anyway. Consider: You toss in 50k in SWPPX. Fee is 2.00. So that's 5.00 a year in fees. Big deal. I blow that much on a single MCD's breakfast run.

Santa rally comes from low volume and concomitant low volatility. Vol sellers buy SPY shares to gamma hedge pushing the market up a bit. I need to win the lottery to buy stocks. I was already planning on using my Christmas money which isn't a lot, but last night my laptop fan started going in and out and making a lot of noise so it looks like I'm about to lose it. There are many humans under many circumstances. It is probably best for me, I was going to hold until hopefully somewhat nearly timing the bottom and then getting some stocks, even if fractional shares, until I could get up just enough to try my hand at options (which I have been paper trading daily) to hopefully grow it a bit faster until I could get to a point where I have enough to diversify into some longs, some swings, and still have a portion for options without risking my whole. Then, once I hopefully build up enough with that, I have a tangible goods business I intend to start but there are some legal requirements that must be met in order to sell these (food) goods online rather than just at farmer's markets, which I can no longer do because I have a health issue that keeps me from being able to go out in public anymore for anything more than very short trips back and forth like taking the garbage to the dump, which even then must be timed against the issues.

Anyway, I do not know the fellow that was quoted above, I'm just saying there are certainly circumstances where one might think they need to win the lotto to buy stocks.

I'm thinking about putting my emergency fund into CDs. I need about $3k/mo to survive, so I was thinking about buying a $3k CD the first of every month. If rates drop in the next 3-6 months I'll feel like a genius, and whish I'd gone for 5year CDs. My emergency savings account is paying 3.3% and 1yr CDs are paying 4.15 that's a 25% increase in interest income on my emergency fund. An extra $212/yr. The penalties are higher on 4yr+ CDs, and I don't have enough cash to make anything longer than a 1 year emergency fund ladder anyway. Penalty on the 1 year is 6 months simple interest.
