I want to tell you the funny story of GBTC because it's funny and also I wonder how many similar instruments have propped BTC up
So GBTC, the Grayscale bitcoin fund, is a bag of bitcoin. It's supposed to effectively let you trade bitcoin on the stock market. Historically it traded at a premium, so last year you might pay $100 for GBTC shares but they'd be backed by only $70 in bitcoin or whatever. Matt Levine speculated that this is because it's more convenient. You don't have to deal with creating a private key and then losing it, you just buy at your broker and Grayscale takes care of things for you. So there's more demand for GBTC shares than supply and they end up trading above bitcoin.

That was last year. This year, GBTC trades at a discount to bitcoin. Meaning, you spend $100 on GBTC and get shares that are backed by $150 in BTC. This made no sense to me. Can't you just arbitrage - buy GBTC, redeem it for BTC and sell that?

Well, turns out this thing never had a redemption mechanism. They filed an application to become an ETF with the SEC in 2021, they're waiting for approval, until then the bag of bitcoins can apparently only grow, not shrink. So you have this giant fund that own 3% of all BTC or whatever, and it's not allowed to sell. When BTC was high, it bought and bought but now that BTC is down, it can't sell them.

tldr: Eventually GBTC will enable redemptions and push the price of BTC down. I wonder how many other funds exist in a similar position, propping up BTC the way GBTC has. If it's too many then the price of BTC really is just a bubble driven by a feedback loop of leverage

not him but im in a similar situation and have an AS in electrical engineering. it pays to be smart and to know how to code these days. it's very comfy. it's honestly really weird how the higher up you are in life the easier things get (if you want them to and you care about having that sort of lifestyle instead of just being the best or making the most money). people working at mcdonalds or the grocery store get treated like shit and paid like shit and have to work hard, or blue collar/construction workers. it's sort of like how it's really hard to make money if you have no money but it's really easy to make money if you already have a lot of it, like the people who need it the most have the hardest time getting it and the people who don't need money have the easiest time making more. people like Asmongold or Lirik or Moonmoon for example are already rich but they just stream for fun now and give 0 fucks and they still rake in the cash with 0 effort. people here are throwing their 4 figure accounts at highly risky options trades while rich people can just collect divvys and make millions off of their billions with zero effort or risk.

this was my point though. doesn't seem like it changes anything or makes them happier or even really opens them up to some sort of amazing experiences that you can only get with vast sums of money.
