Yesterday while doing my end of year bagging I also tossed a bit into my SWPPX and bagged more VZ to send this year off nicely. Well part how I've got to where I am is by being smart. (No college debt, no auto loans, no ex-wife/kiddie support, no crushing c.c debt). The other part is taking advantage of things when they present themselves (bought my house cheap due to the 2008 fallout; pay $400 a month for a 3bed, 1.5 bath house in nice neighborhood). Also my costs are low due to I live/work in a smallish city so a tank of gas will last me a whole month. COL in general is low to.

The state legislature in their great wisdom (yeah right) seen fit to give me an 8% pay hike this year w/ another on tap for 2023 round 6-12%. The state income tax rate is falling starting on Jan 1 and will fall again in Jan 2024. Which means even more green left in my wallet. Let's just say I've gotten a few other pay bumps to. Since 2021 my pay has gone up uh 60 - 65% with the pending 2023 bump still a coming. What will really be nice is the restoration of the 5% annual pay hike. Fat chance of it happening but in the days of yore before my time working there they'd give out 5% hikes every year.

I'd say the biggest driver of having money "just there" is just not blowing it on toys or "splurge of the week/month" type thing. To give example; I bought a new 24" computer monitor for myself as a christmas present . Uh it's the first new monitor that I've bought since 2006. (which is a 19"). Most of the things I buy is cause I have to, not cause I get a case of "I want, I want" every time I go out. Thank god my Wife is kinda the same way. Now we do have a weakness for fast food. Hell we spent a shat pot of money this year on fast food. (Yet somehow or other we're both not 400lbs fat fucks so there's that at least)

I chose 5 stocks for my son who is in a program where he gets to choose stocks on someone else's dime for a couple of years and keep the gains. It started in Feb 21 and they are up just barely under 30%, with the lowest of the individual stocks being up over 17%. These are all S&P stocks. If we had full control I would have sold them all Friday after Thanksgiving and moved them into 6 month treasuries to wait out the impending crash. Some still grew since then, and some dipped a little, but that's what I would have done. Anything that happens between now and the program ending next year is essentially completely outside of my fault, but that's how it presently stands. That's 5/5 market beating picks.
