they're not fucked but the pressure from lifting rates is causing the financial system to buckle. note that if japan goes down it will contagion everything else to death. so signs like this (assuming the common sense goal is not to actually crash everything into oblivion) suggest that rate increases are peaking

Japan cannot afford to defend their currency against the dollar anymore. They are forced to tighten monetary policy by raising the rates on their bonds. Japanese stocks tank. They basically fight each other.
Higher interest rates make lazy unproductive and extremely risk averse Japanese companies even worse as they just collect interest in the bank and don’t invest. Tue whole point of low rates in japan is to try force them to take more risk and invest, leading to higher tax revenues, potentially tax cuts on younger work force later etc. growth in the right way.

This happening today is just basically the boj saying they cannot maintain that policy with such a retarded government when already dealing with current global pressures

Been a long time in the making. Jap bonds have only one buyer in the open market, the JCB (cent bank). The bond market is used to support the JPY. The 10y bonds were capped at .25% terminally. They just raised the cap to .5% to defend the USD/JPY @145 with infinite bond buying
While this has strengthened JPY, it has sent the bond market into a death spiral, with the nikkei and jpy soon to follow. Suspending futures markets is a sign of white-hot panic. The fed will not intervene on their behalf, nor will the ecb. It's really bad.
It's over. I expect countries like Italy, Greece, England, to follow.

Perhaps a nothingburger to artificially increase the value of JPY? The reaction in the markets is too strong.

It means that the BOJ is loosening its control on the bond market somewhat, allowing yields to rise a bit. We're probably talking 10BPs here, but the BOJ would not do this voluntarily.
Any variable indicating economic flow (prices, bond yields, FX pairs) moves to its equilibrium if undisturbed, i.e. if market forces are allowed to operate freely. Keeping it from its equilibrium takes resources from someone - the central bank, consumers who have to deal with shortages due to price controls, etc. If the BOJ pegs something it's pegged for 30 years less strictly, it's a good indicator that it can't peg it that tightly anymore.
A, to stay with the number, 10BPs move is not meaningful ordinarily, but they payoff graph of many participants has considerably steepened due to leverage over the decades, with there being a positive "plateau" (it has a plateau because of hedges feathering adverse market moves up to a point) and a steep drop-off on at least one side. If you go to the edges of the plateau you have hedged, you can quickly barrel into the abyss.
To concretize this with the YCC example: the yen had been cratering all year, and suppressing bond yields means that the BOJ has to buy bonds with newly printed yen. Less and less people want yen, so this leads to depreciation in the FX markets, though not necessarily domestic price increases (those would require a base of spenders which Japan doesn't have, unless the government starts up fiscal spending in a big way, e.g. on the navy). If the yen just starts depreciating rapidly, even without leverage in the Japanese economy, it can kick off a flight to the dollar, which will make it expensive, causing dollar shortages among dollar-debtors, mostly Third World countries. The system is largely predicated on not just the world economy slowing down, but on not a single major economy slowing down, due to the interest rate mechanics of it. It's always a firefight when it happens, and now the whole world is burning.

widening the ycc band isnt necessarily a sign that japan is in a bad economic situation. the boj may widen the ycc band for a variety of reasons, including to provide more flexibility in implementing its monetary policy or to respond to changes in economic conditions.

in general the boj's ycc policy is designed to help maintain stability in the financial markets and support economic growth. the boj may widen the ycc band as a way to provide more stimulus to the economy, for example, if it is experiencing a slowdown or if there are downside risks to growth. on the other hand, the boj may also widen the ycc band if economic conditions are improving and it wants to provide more flexibility in its policy response.

>Is Japan fucked
No. It's good for Japanese bonds and the Yen.
More money will stay at home and in the bond market. As a result of that other countries, namely the US, will lose at least some of the liquidity that Japanese bond investors were bringing to the US bond market.

there is going to be an adjustment process but that will be managed in cooperation with US

IMO this is the number 1 reason crypto hasn’t been banned yet, the US and EU know the rest of the world won’t give a flying fuck if we ban it and the last thing we want is a dozen new Singapores springing up all around because we’re too stubborn to not partake. The US will no doubt regulate and try to control it best as it can and try to morph it into being a railway for more US dollar efficiency. This is why all the regulation talks always center around stablecoins, ironically the last thing in crypto people give a shit about versus the mad gains.

This appears to be a repeat of the Bank of England's strategy. They were raising rates, then a week later pension funds got in trouble because of bond yields rising. BoE then printed money to buy up bonds and bail out pension funds. In Bank of Japan's case it only took 2 hours to make the decision to buy up more bonds.

Antique dealer here. If fly to Japan to buy Nintendo games and vintage 1960s records as well as onions toys for resale-will this mean the prices for product will be lower or higher in near future?

I’ve been thinking about building a network there to harvest harder to find product and bring it here, but it seems the North American market is also oversaturated with product at the moment.

People actually marched on the streets of DC in protest of Volcker.
>In January 1979, nearly 3,000 farmers drove their tractors to Washington, D.C., many of them from thousands of miles away. The Jimmy Carter administration agreed that the Farmers Home Administration would stop all foreclosures. Soon after the rally was over, the Home Administration resumed foreclosures of farms with past due loans.
The increase in rates bankrupted tens of thousands of small family farms, putting their land in the hands of the banks and further consolidating agriculture into giant conglomerates.

Volcker did the hike during a period when we weren't too far from the gold standard and nation's economies weren't so heavily intertwined that butterfly effects couldn't be reasonably anticipated. Powell toying with the idea of doing something similar ~40 years later is playing with fire.
