I don't understand why desktop wallets are never mentioned as a go to solution.

Just make your wallet/dat/utc file on some old laptop that's airgapped. Then copy it onto a USB and save it in 5 different computers/locations.

If you have a decent passphrase no one's cracking it anytime soon. If you're only receiving you never have to unlock the wallet so there's no risk from keyloggers/viruses. Then when it does come to spending time it's piss easy.

m "...Oh my gosh, I can't believe I just said that."
m "That pun was completely unintentional, I swear!"
m "But anyway..."
m "I know how much you cared about her, so it only feels right for me to share her last moments with you."
m "You know how Sayori is really clumsy?"
m "Well, she kind of messed up the whole hanging thing..."
m "You're supposed to jump from high enough that the rope snaps your neck, making it quick and painless."
m "But she just used a chair, meaning she kind of just left herself to slowly asphyxiate."
m "But a few seconds in, she must have changed her mind or something..."
m "Because she started clawing at the rope, trying to free herself."
m "She must have kept at it all the way until she lost consciousness."
m "That's why her fingertips were all bloody, anyway."
m "Come to think of it, it was probably less 'changing her mind' and more just her survival instincts kicking in."
m "So you can't really fault her for that."
m "It's easier to think that she probably wouldn't have changed her mind anyway, right?"
m "It's not healthy to think about the things you could have done differently."
m "So just remember that even though you could have saved her, it's technically not your fault she killed herself."

The entire reason I didn't save the json wallet is because I didn't want a wallet file (which a hacker is obviously going to steal instantly) where as, my thinking was: If I have a random txt file buried in my HD somewhere, they'll be less likely to find it if I was ever hacked or laptop stolen/lost, etc.
I don't want to bully you anon but
t. tech illiterate

All you had to do was put the wallet on a usb and throw it in your safe. Two or three USBs actually, in case of corruption.

Alternatively you could have put the private key on some paper in the safe. Stored the private key in an encrypted database on your PC like KeePass or some shit, really so many options.

Shit just sucks, man. Its not money I never really had. I held specifically
I just lost the access to it at some point within the last 2 years

>>5297711
Yes. I need the private key which was stored in a text file and/or deleted/lost at some point over the past 2 years.
Knowing me, I probably placed said text file in some music album folder/some Ebook folder on purpose to "hide" said key. I did this before with BTC lol

>>5297835
Yeah I know but as I've stated multiple times now... the ETH was worth at most 50 usd back then. Total. Meaning 55 eth was only worth 50 bucks or less when I done all of this shit.

I didn't really care for losing 50 bucks, it wouldn't hurt me too bad, I never expected eth to moon so hard.

Like I said, I avoided touching or cashing out anything during the past 2 years just because it was sort of a habit of mine to check the price every few months. I haven't accessed the wallet since I created it approx 2.5 years ago now.

So yeah, over that time, in my mind, I thought it was safe and I still had the key, etc. Obviously not.

I've been in crypto since 2011 so know a bit about it. I've had airgapped laptops during the silkroad era, etc. BUT... 50 bucks to me wasn't worth allocating an airgapped laptop to, as I said

Only now when its worth 40k USD does it seem reasonable to do so
