Should I buy a $550k house or a $150k condo and buy a franchise in my neighborhood? I'm a software dev so will just get the franchise running then just pay others to keep it going. Then just have it as a side gig for my dev job

You're not going to get granted a franchise just because you want one. You need to go through a vetting process and have certain criteria like experience and large cash reserves to be granted one. Also it's going to be tons of work upfront to get one running and you won't make much if you just hire other people to do things for you.
