yeah. OP is actually right, more people have lost Bitcoin in self-custody than with exchanges. Nevertheless you should never have all your crypto, or the majority of it, on an exchange. Best practice would be to spread a part of your stack amongst the most reputable US-based exchanges (Coinbase, Gemini, Kraken) just to have a fall back in case, God forbid, your offline stack is compromised by hacking or faulty memory. Never be too centralized, never have a single point of failure.
