so is blockchain just a decentralized database? how could this be used for video games? the only thing i can think of is MMOs player inventories or things like in game auction houses. people say you can use it for things like figuring out who shot first in an fps game, or for messaging apps but then each message would cost a dollar or something retarded

Actually for many things. The ingame economy and ingame money, turning every item into an NFT, game passes, vouchers and coupons etc. and could even be carried over into other games.
you could also trade in game items in secondary markets.
