At a 20k loss on positions now worth around 25k against my 30% marginal state + federal tax rate, I will save 6k in taxes by taking the loss.
If I can buy those positions back next month for less than 31k, a 24% increase, then I'll have saved myself money. On the other hand, I'll be on the hook for taxes next year if the positions reverse their current losses. These positions were pretty stable for several months, until this past week. My gut feeling is that others have already been harvesting losses, leading to the recent declines. So I'm worried it'll rally quickly if/when those sellers re-enter.

Tax loss harvesting gets a lot of hype, but it doesn't seem like such a great deal to me. There's a lot of volatility that can happen within a month. Am I missing something?
