52791974 No.52791974 [Reply] [Original]

I'm going to make a micro-pub in the North of England. It'll have 5 beers on tap (IPA, lager, porter, whit, and a session ale), 3 bar foods (roast potatoes, Bombay potatoes and grilled cheesev toasties), crisps and pork scratchings behind the bar, and a fridge with craft sale options. Upstairs I want a room with a three-quarter snooker table and maybe a CRT TV with an N64. And also picnic benches out front.

I have the set up money, and experience working a pub, also I have enough money to put in the time.

What are Biz's advice and ideas? also looking for investors.

>I know it'll be difficult, but will market to running clubs, for them to finish their runs there. And will keep things easy and simple

You are starting a pub, with pub numbers in freefall since 1990, with every larger numbers of adults tee-total, in a deprived part of the country, with minimal indoor seating, with a drinks-led menu in a food-led market, and with food that presumably requires cooking...so micro-pub with 95% kitchen space...landlords are bleeding, that is the upside (and in most parts of the UK, they are still holding on for rental growth...because they are delusional).

Micro pubs are doing ok. And the food is cheap and easy to prepare, (maybe drop the cheese toastie so the bar can do the roasting, so no kitchen staff) the area in looking at isn't deprived, they've got richer. Rent isn't going up now too. As for tee totallers, they still go to these places, will make money on soft drinks and the dining clubs. I know it won't be easy, but a large part of cost cutting will be me working in it.

>Upstairs I want a room with a three-quarter snooker table
no, you want a normal-size coin op pool table. Which offers quick easy games (high turnover), doesnt need supervison, can be played by 2/4 people or multiroom with a pot prize (killer) and people dont get anal about chipped balls, bent cues or semen stains on the felt. Snooker offers none of these, nor even a particularly satisfactory game of snooker on a 3/4 size table. Food, you need to stick to 'warm-up' only, otherwise you need a prep kitchen, and thats a world of hassle, hurt and expense. The basic issue with 'micro' anything, you got most of the same hassle (building overheads, staff, cleaning, complaining neighbors, etc) and none of the benefits of volume sales. But that all by side, good luck to you

Is this a normal thing in England? I have 15 years industry experience more than ten of which are management and I’ve been to a number of bars, clubs, restaurants and everything in between and Ive never seen something like this.
The closest place I can think of is a dive bar near where I grew up which was an absolute shit hole and frequented by people on fixed income and heroin addictions.
How many seats is it going to be / what’s the occupancy?
Who is doing the cooking? Do you actually have a business plan out together that shows your COGs, projections, startup costs, etc? Do you know what vendors you need to call and what they price it at? If you don’t you won’t know you margins and you won’t know what you need to sell at. Do you what the closest place sells their product for? What’s your competitive edge? Don’t say it’s an N64 or that people will want to go there because they just will.
I’m asking because it’s a hard enough business as it is plus there’s a lot of liabilities on top of it because you’re selling liquor. Just think it all through.
No one who isn’t an idiot is going to invest with you if you can’t give them an investor deck and lay out the projections including returns on their money and the last people you want to be taking money from are idiots because they’re going to be at your bar every day talking about how they’re ‘an owner’ with their $50k investment drinking all your profits away with their idiot friends and dumb broads they want to impress.

Fairly normal now. Less overheads. The gimmick is local products, good value, and cosy decor. Might be able to do it for less than 75k GBP total, that should last 2 years of I put the work in too.

>>52800882
I need another 30k GBP. I think it'll take a year or so to get into real profit. And I'll offer a percentage of ownership (if they want) but the main thing will be profit share

Multicart probably and a few real ones. I've already got the N64 and loads of controllers. Might pick up a giant CRT if I can find one. Obviously not everyone will want to multiplay, so maybe the games room will be quiet, and you can get the key from me behind the bar, and open it up yourself. I'm going for cool people and runners. Hash house Harriers for example.

Yeah. Will have a local Porter Stout. The problem work Guinness is that you can get it anywhere. My concept is beer you can't normally get in the pub. And local products only. I agree with this somewhat. But micro-pubs are popping up everywhere. Low overheads and putting it in a rich area will help.

I was in a pub once where they just brought out trays of small roast potatoes covered in salt. All free. But maybe me but another 2 beers. I thought it was great marketing. If I'm allowed roast them behind the bar, that'd be great. But it's not worth having a kitchen.
