Who cares. When people were DRSing close to 50-60% of float, institutions sold off a couple of million and we were back to 40ish % of free float. People DRSed more, we got back to literally 59.99%, and voila, institutions sold off another few million again. You know, I know, everyone knows, that institutional holdings is for all intents and purposes as fucky as free float. Now we learned that about 15 million shares were taken from institutions to GME holders last quarter. Thats another 15 mil that wont be paperhanded and worse, used for shorting. The last couple of weeks, weve DRSed at pace of 100-140k shares per day. FTX news greatly accelerated this, as people are starting to learn what financial institutions are like, and that IOUs are not gonna be helpful.

People are comparing DRS as percentage of float now, but everyone is incentivized to just buy and DRS until its literally not possible any more for whatever reason. This is partially because its one reliable way to actually end it (there are other ways too, that will likely materialize before 100% DRS), but equally because the more shares one have, the bigger ones portion of squeeze.

Between you and me, hedgies are doing one thing here: when they fuck and stall, people are willing to take less money per share. People have talked about this before, but the exponential nature of money printing and the fact that billions of dollars flow into the stock market DAILY (via 401ks, investments, DRIP programs etc) the stock market should be theoretically just melting higher as there is a finite number of shares relative to an expanding money supply. At some point, the banks run into the problem of a "melt up". They can balance the amount of currency with an offsetting debt/liability. But the stock market just vacuums up so much capital that supply/demand is going to get out of whack.
I think we are starting to see hints of what has happened. Out of complete necessity, Wallstreet has to operate a "fractional reserve" stock system so they can let algos generate some price movement to allow people to trade, and entice people to stay exposed to these financial assets. The banks can manage a slow and steady ascent in the market pricing so as to pump and prime capital and spending into the economy at their whim. However, all they are doing is managing a ponzi scheme. It's ALL smoke and mirrors. We have no idea how bad this really is. GME could very well be the tip of the iceberg. The new stock market model was rolled out with algos and hedgies and FOMC approval but they never addressed the laws that retail can claim their shares. And now the GLOBAL PONZI has a fucking time limit.

Personally I highly doubt brokers can do what that poster suggested. The shares in brokers are technically owned in their name on the books sure, but contractually those shares still belong to you. The only way they should be able to be sold without your direct consent is if you are on margin and get called, or if the broker itself goes bankrupt. If they could just sell off what you own at whatever price at any point, then it would have been far better to let this moass ages ago and have the brokers force-sell everything in the name of "Protecting the markets", before such a massive amount of shares were registered. The fact that they haven't seems to indicate to me that they can't. Not to mention if they could the countless lawsuits would bankrupt any brokers who did, so they'd be sacrificing themselves to protect some hedgefunds, rather than just letting things proceed uninterrupted and reap the benefits of a new freshly rich investors who will freely advertise your brokerage as reliable and trustworthy.
