the number one driver of US Dollar strength is interest rate differentials between it and other countries. the US was the first major country to hike aggressively, and hiked to a higher rate faster than The EU, the UK and Japan. it simply meant holding onto US dollars was better than these other currencies, as they paid out less(in short term bonds) and also inflation was higher(and could stay higher due to their slow reaction). now bonds are pricing inflation coming down albeit slowly, and slowing growth(bond yields go down during recession). as these other countries hike and reach where the Fed is, the dollars recent strength diminishes

because Trump bullied the Fed into kicking the can down the road. Then covid insane printing.
the fed funds rate should always be kept at 2% or higher minimum to prevent bubbles like this from forming.
Instead they let it gradually build for decades. Now the fed is in a true dilemma.
If they continue hiking now, things are going to snap in Q1, fucking hard. 10% unemployment. If they ease, there's enough stored dollars to bring inflation up really quick.
Look at the housing market right now. Someone who paid $600k for their house, buyers can only offer $300k for it now. Interest rates have never gone up this fast.

Should they cut 50 bps or pause? The problem was no one can afford houses, isnt it better to crash?

I am familiar with only one DRS. The Drag Reduction System (DRS) is a controversial driver-controlled device aimed at aiding overtaking and increasing the chances of wheel-to-wheel racing in Formula 1.
The system, which involves the driver opening a flap in their rear wing to reduce drag levels and gain top speed when running within a second of a car in front, was introduced back in 2011. It remains in use with the new rules reset from the start of the 2022 season.

you know how you were selling coal in runescape for 150g/ea and there was someone complaining that if only every single coal miner in the game collaborated, they could agree to sell at 200g/ea instead?
GME baggies are the same type of retard, they imagine that they will own every single GME share and then tell the shorts to pay $99999999 to get a share back. DRS prevents the shares from being loaned out and also lets the other baggies know how much of the share total has been captured

itt: there are mumus who still believe in soft landing while fed did everything wrong in 2021 (muh printing, muh transitory, muh dot plot projection,..).
according to (((them))) we would've been at 2% inflation already at this point but instead you have tightest labor market, wages still increasing (wage price spiral? hello?), consoomer getting squeezed (highest credit debt), energy crisis and inflation is still at almost 8%. who the fuck is still believing in the fed projections?
earnings contractions and big layoffs haven't even begun, rate hikes still ongoing but the shit&piss is currently trading on a growth rate of 8%.
but sure, the inflation will just get to 2% target while economy is still growing. nevermind any possible stagflation or market liquidity risk.
can mumus get even more delusional?

Previous economic data that was bad on face value, for example higher unemployment, pumped the markets because it meant Powell could hike more slowly.

I think inflation/interest risks are over and going forward recession risks will be in focus. That means bad economic data could lead to market dumps because it confirms the recession scenario.

What I'm trying to say is clown world could be over soon, at least when it comes to jobs numbers, savings rate or other consumer metrics.

Big brain here - what is being missed is the impact that slight volume decreases will have on profit margins and cash flow of mega cap companies. Margins have been negative or razor thin for years, in 2020-2021 big retailers started paying way more for labor jobs than what was feasible. This was okay because rates were low and cash flow high.

The problem is that the wage hikes can’t be reversed and each year the peasants want more money. The more you pay peasants the more the next caste desires etc.

The compression this drove squeezed the last chances for profitability from retailers as they now have higher freight costs as well.

Oh yeah - don’t forget the increased theft and shrink losses. Hard to offset low margin and high shrink with increased wages and decreased volume.
