The bond market is stupid, but not so stupid as to forget what money printing did to CPI and yields these last few years. It now understands that yes, the government can spike M2 any time they want, and yes, this means inflation.

If you play out a crash: it would be bearish for yields and bullish for bonds right up until congress opens their stupid mouths and says "we have to DO something!" The market will know it means helicopter money, and that means inflation comes right back. Hence the flight-to-safety will be short circuited because the market will try to price in what it now realizes will come next. Hence long bonds are a dicey crash play this time around and all the "buy bonds wear diamonds" guys are dummies who don't understand that this cycle is different.

Explanation (AFAIK): The Fed normally takes the interest it earns from its bond holdings and gives that back to the treasury to help pay the federal deficit.
It can't go negative technically, this is an accounting trick that allows us to measure money that would have gone to the treasury but is not, because the fed is tightening, by simply letting bonds mature, and not remitting that income to the treasury.

This isn't a red flag by any means, but it does raise the question how long the government can operate without fed remittances.

All loans are deflationary by nature, the fed loans out $100, and expects $104 back despite there being more money expected back than there is in the entirety of the system. The system is only kept afloat by a continual influx of new loans, where not all the money is expected back at the same time.
And that is the risk people are trying to highlight here. Without a steady stream of new loans it won't take long before the debt market breaks.


The fed going broke isn't a problem anyone should be worried about. It's that the treasury could go broke, and if the fed bails them out inflation spikes up extremely fast.

Why did they puke during the crash, even as index shorts kept printing? Because some big money understood immediately that the Fed response would be inflationary and got the hell out. The flight-to-safety via bonds was short-circuited. The trade worked only for a little while, and faltered part way through the crash. Meanwhile index short etfs did just fine the whole way through. Most of my son's stocks (S&P longs, per share) took another hit today (2nd in a row) but one of them stayed green the whole time, and the other went green during power hour.

One of my 4 1/20/23 paper puts from 11/29 went up to $220 for a bit today, and another to $33. The Boeing one peaked around minus $115 and I can't remember the other but it was a little better than that. I could have imaginary sold 3 of them on 11/30 for over $100. It is interesting to watch the various potential scenarios "play out" with them each day. For instance, right now would I have sold the Boeing at mnus 115 (which is better than other levels it has reached, though was profitable early on 11/30) to take perhaps the least loss, or keep holding hoping for better? I suspect BA will do some more dropping and would probably continue to hold.
