Salaries were originally intended for CEOs who worked 24/7 on the company and didn't want to actually pay THEMSELVES by the hour, otherwise the company would go bankrupt and they would have no money left over to pay others and general costs. It allowed to CEOs to work as long as they wanted on building the company, with a flat cost that they could budget.

Now, for almost everyone who makes over 100k (sometimes even 60k) corporations try to make the argument that these people should be salaried even if they are nothing but a code monkey. It is a way to squeeze more labor out of people who aren't even in the leadership of the company or have 0 stake in it.

I've realized this after working salaried jobs.
They basically set a ceiling for your pay, but a floor for your contributions. If you dip below this floor at all, you're at risk of being out. If you routinely "go above and beyond" as expected, they don't give you anything more.

They just slowly squeeze more labor out of you while not increasing your pay. While your "merit increases" each year for meeting performance expectations don't even match inflation.

At my last job interview, I asked about the pay structure and hours. They told me engineers are salaried, but they typically work 50-60 hours per week. The pay wasn't even good and they offered only 2 weeks pee year of vacation time without even the option of taking unpaid time off if you want to go beyond that.
