You mean like we have right now where you can't pay for gas in the US with Canadian coinage? Silver is for barter. This idea that you'll be paying a large chain grocery store with silver rounds, or numismatic constitutional silver is dumb. A collapse will revert to barter. Large companies will not be running in whatever false scenerio you have in your head. We will not revert to a silver backed centralized monetary system. Silver is silver and it will remain silver beyond the fiat system collapse.

>> No.52706305

Good morning frens,
i think about starting to stack silver.
However, the state here (Krautland) wants 19% tax for a purchase of silver, but 0% tax for gold. This makes silver less attractive and 1oz costs ca. 30 dollar.
What do you think? Any possibility to buy without paying 19%?

OK, here goes nothing, the 19% tax just increases the spot in your country, so you buy with +19%, you also get to sell at +19%. The only issue is if your country decreases the taxes. Which, I don't see happening anytime soon.

Are you sure, here in jeet land, the +19% tax just increases the spot. My dealer has a 4% spread. Whatever tax or premium it has, its always sell price of that day minus 4%. Check with multiple dealers though. For some context, here in jeetland, we have around 15% + 3% + some small amount of tax while buying. There is CGT, but that's separate.

>> No.52706557

>>52706358
The right mindset to have is that there are all kinds of stackers, all kinds of people, and all kinds of situations that could arise. I believe I said this to you in a previous thread-identify why you want to stack. If you're stacking to barter and buy goods in a post shtf scenerio then small recognizable amounts like local country dimes are ideal. They're worth about $2+ each and will be tradeable for goods with almost anyone. Quarters, Half Dollars, Peace and Morgans, and Silver Eagles are the same. You won't be buying a couple cartons of eggs with a silver dollar though, and you have to factor in the numismatic factor when considering WHY you're stacking. Understanding your 'why' and understanding what products are out there are the single most important things when stacking.

>> No.52706559

>>52706432
You don't sell back to the dealers, you sell it literally everywhere else and you can easily add back the 19% tax because the buyer cannot get it cheaper anywhere either. It's literally the free market, you decide the price, you can sell it for just a bit cheaper than the dealers.
The tax was added to make you not buy physical silver, when in reality you must buy it because they don't want you to do it.

I mostly buy from kids and grandkids that don't want their dead relatives shit. Estate sales yield the best value for sterling and sometimes even gold. Once found a 14k gold necklace misidentified because it used the Italian gold hallmarking convention. It said "585" on it instead of 14k. They thought it was costume. I got a 13g gold chain for $6. Also once found a 43g 10k thick link rope chain and a 10k diamond ring inside of a commercial vent fan I picked out of a dumpster at a restaurant remodel. Have no idea how they got in there, but whatever. What has two thumbs and likes free gold?
This fuckin' guy right here.
Consignment shops are okay too if the proprietor isn't a hardass on negotiation. It's a dangerous business though. You use some extremely noxious acids and bases, as well as routinely working with furnaces and torches. My best advice is to read read read.

Sorry anon, I don't post stack pics or pin down how much I have. I've been at this for years. My stack is significant as it represents an great investment of time and labor.
I honestly have never bothered about Pt group metal recovery. So I couldn't tell you how much would be capable of recovering. Plated jewelry is also hard to say because different manufacturers use different thicknesses of plating, though it never exceeds more than a few microns in thickness. You might recover between 1 and 5g if you process around 10 kilos of plated jewelry. I have probably 15 kilos or so of old silverplate. One day I'll build a stripping cell, just to see if it's worth the investment in time and capital for the return.

Fair enough, thanks for your thoughts. I don't even know how much silver plated stuff i have, definitely more than my 40-50kg of sterling but the junk from bulk lots containing good silver just gets piled up in the garage next to my pewter hoard. My expectation is that one day I'll be able to sell it to a refinery set up to recover the sub-5% silver content and good stuff like nickel. I doubt I'll ever try stripping it myself, if I do I'll probably ignore the electroplate and just do the thick Sheffield plate which actually contains a decent little bit. Sreetips did a video on a thick plated dish and recovered something like 5.26% of the total weight in silver, definitely adds up if you have lots of it.

>Is it authentic old tin/lead/silver pewter or more modern tin/antimony/bismuth alloys?

No the vast majority is modern (less than 100 years old), I have very few authentic 18th/19th century pieces. I'd like to collect more of the old pewter, ones with monograms and dates carved in them are really cool but I hardly ever see it. I like stacking pewter because the outlook for tin is super bullish with $100+/kg in the cards this decade, it's commonly overlooked thus super cheap and shows up in the same places sterling does. I've seen marked purities as high as 97% tin but most is closer to 92%. It melts low and is fun to pour, and is actually pretty liquid because of healthy niche demand from hobbyists who'll buy bars on eBay. You may remember when it hit $50/kg earlier this year, that was exciting but I'm HODLing for the real gains coming later. Anyway good luck hunting down the scrappies; the more you look the luckier you'll be.

Good question, I haven't kept a spreadsheet but something like $6-7/kg which is higher than it should be. I could have a much lower average if I only bought the cheapest of cheapies but have a hard time leaving it behind when I find it which messes up the DCA, I'm better at controlling myself when it comes to silver. You could easily stack pewter for $4/kg or less if you were more disciplined about it, those will be worthy gains when we hit triple digits.

>what are your nuanced opinions on collecting silver plated stuff?

Some plated stuff is valuable in its own right, people collect high quality antique silverplate so if they are attractive well-made 18th or 19th century pieces, or made in patterns in vogue right now they're worth getting if priced right. At worst you could sell as copper or brass scrap to a junkyard so if you see a 5lb platter for a few bucks you really can't go wrong. I got this huge heavy Sheffield plate meat dome for $4 last year, probably several ounces of silver in it and as a collector item or something to mog plebs with at dinner parties it's certainly worth more than the cost of a crappy hamburger.

Looks like an attractive haul, are the shakers plated too or might they be sterling? Sounds like you're in a good area to hunt, it may be worth asking when they bring out fresh inventory, or looking for the area where they stage shopping carts or rolling shelves loaded with stuff that they just finished pricing in the back before they have someone push the carts around to put things on their proper shelves. I'd imagine that you have competition from old boomers who haven't croaked yet and have nothing better to do and the Goodwill also probably pulls the obviously marked silver to sell online but they'll often overlook pieces with weird European hallmarks, .800 silver or old unmarked coin silver so being among the first to see it gives you a much better chance of getting the goodies. If you have an eye for flipping things be on the lookout for other stuff, several days ago I found no PMs but got $200+ worth of desirable vintage stainless for $15 (and $70 of great "Foxfire" survivalist books for $5 which I'm keeping), it's a good way to replenish the scrapping hobby fund and make the trips worth the effort when you don't find shiny cheapies.

Heh be careful fren, that's a good way to get a house full of crap that's not worth much. The vast majority of unmarked stuff is just plated so you should be selective about it, try learning about the market for old silver and silverplate and the different international hallmarking systems. I have been to 1 of those bulk facilities but was honestly overwhelmed and didn't really try digging through the dozens of gaylords full of random crap, needless to say I didn't find anything but it may indeed be worthwhile if you're looking for stuff to resell in addition to good silver items for the stack.

Hell yeah scrapperbro what a deal, free PMs are legit lol. Have you gotten it yet or is it a fresh purchase? I see that it's a situation where they sent you an offer, I've noticed that happens pretty frequently if the items don't sell quickly so I'll put stuff with mediocre prices in the watchlist if instinct suggests a good discount might be forthcoming after a while. I had this 610 gram $399 BIN price footed sterling salver in my watchlist for a while (seller didn't understand the hallmarks and wasn't sure it was sterling so I thought chances for price drops were good) and last month the seller sent an offer to sell for $150, a fuckin' 62% $249 discount. Yeah I'll take more sub-$10/ozt silver, pleasure doin' business lol. Keep up the cheapies man.

I have several thrift stores on my list that I know don't screen out the PMs, at least not very thoroughly, so those are always more worthwhile than a typical Goodwill or salvation army that usually does pull the good stuff. For estate sales you want to be in line before opening on the first day because the good deals disappear in the first 30 minutes unless it's tucked away out of sight in some back room or has really obscure hallmarks most people don't recognize. You might have lots of well seasoned competition in your area that knows exactly what they're doing so it'll be hard to get deals if they're always first in line. I'd monitor estate sales more actively if the thrift stores there remove all the good stuff, and IRL estate auctions where you bid with a number card can be really great too. The early bird gets the worm, leaving subsequent birds thinking there are no worms to begin with. Adjust your timing or strategy a bit and hopefully you'll finally get a good load.

Before you go that far get a little gold, maybe some platinum. If you're set there or have your heart set on being a purist, then choose a set amount you'll be willing to spend that you think you'll be able to profit off down the road. Silver should be viewed as a tool for retention of wealth or a play in the long con. Also you can try numismatics like pic rel, just try to find higher quality/better conditioned ones.

Assuming that's a 12-16oz capacity mug with no custom monograms you did fine, ya paid retail price but big old silver beer mugs are pretty scarce and hold their value well, you should try to get sterling cheaper in the future though. If however it's just a babby cup made for little kids then sadly ya done goofed.
