Why do people travel? Seems like a big water of money

>> No.52697331

Have you ever travelled anon? I could explain it to you but I feel like it's one of those things that you need to experience yourself to see the benefit. It's like trying to explain what pussy feels like to a virgin.

Dont get me wrong some travel is just tourist trap bullshit or overrated. And you need to find the right type of travel for you (some people like package holidays or cruises, others like going off the beaten path). But you can have some very enjoyable moments from it

They do it so they can take a photo of themselves with their arms wide open looking at the epic [interesting location] giving their back to the camera. Then they can use it to brag about it to people.
As a related advice, if you find a girl who has "I love traveling" in their social media bio, stay away or just fuck her and forget at most.

I like motorcycle travel. I get to ride in landscspes and roads from what I have access to at home. I usually camp along the way. Camping isn't always fun or convenient but it saves a lot of money and usually gives unique experiences.

I dont really get the people that travel to foreign areas, but stay in containment zones that emulate their life at home.

Some people also talk about traveling for food, even within the same country. I haven't noticed much difference in food anywhere in the US. I just assume those people haven't even gone to any non-chain restaurants within their own town.

You may be looking at it negatively when it's a conversation intended to be positive. People have good times traveling and enjoy talking about it to try to share the joy with their friends as well as recall their good memories.

I'm currently traveling the world to see all the world's best fine art, historical sites, and tourist attractions. Wrapping up 3 months in Italy next week, then after a winter of snowboarding in the states I'm going back to Europe (France) to continue my Grand Tour.

When I've seen everything I'm going to set up a homestead somewhere in the american midwest and hopefully have a dozen kids.

I don't think traveling for a purpose, especially an uplifting one like art, is a waste of money. Traveling to drink and play on beaches and overspend on food? Yeah that's a waste. Also sex tourism is acceptable in my books even though I don't partake myself.

Kind of, I guess. I'm back in six figure hell since I was too pussy to sell or short, so I'm just taking it easy right now and traveling thrifty. I also don't have any kind of rent or mortgage payment, so the money I would have been spending on that is going towards hotels/airbnbs, so I'm not spending that much more than I would at home.

I probably could better optimize the money|travel stuff a bit better if I waited for the end of the bear market but I'm not getting any younger. I'm only in my early 30s and I'm already feeling my age. I can't just go go go nonstop anymore, I have to take rest days and time to relax. I probably couldn't do this kind of travel in my 40s even if I had more money. I'd simply get worn down. But that's why I'm going so hard now, so I can get it over and done with and in the future I won't have any regrets about things I didn't take the chance to do.

Italy is fantastic by the way, almost everyone speaks at least some English and there's tons of cool stuff to see. Once you figure out the trains it's also pretty convenient, so city hopping around is a pretty effective way to see all the cool stuff (and of course being Italy there's world-class art just lying around in small outlying cities everywhere north of Naples, so it's worth going outside the big cities).

Enjoy it, anon.

How much stuff do you take with you? I figure you gotta keep it fairly light if you're frequently moving around without a permanent residence or car. Do you basically stick to just 1 suitcase so you can take it with you on foot anywhere? Do you keep any stuff in storage in your home country or is your travel kit all you have?

Also
>get it over and done with
Do you think that will work? Do you think you can "get it out of your system" and go back to a boring life at home, rather than being left hungrier than ever now that you know what you're missing?

I've never been away for more than a month at a time, but every time I get back home and go to work I hate it more than ever because I feel the stark contrast between what I am stuck doing now and what I would rather be doing.

Oh I am, for sure. I'm having a blast, just didn't realize how fast Europe gets cold and didn't bring my good jackets, plus I missed Thanksgiving so I'm looking forward to seeing the family again at Christmas.

I started with a fullsize suitcase and a small backpack, but I seriously overpacked. Brought way too much electronics and too much clothes, especially gym clothes. It's kinda gay looking but I think when I come back I'm going to bring a large backpack and cut down on what I bring so everything can fit in one bag. My stuff's in storage back home. I got kinda lucky with quitting my job and my apartment lease ending at the same time so I committed to traveling and put everything in storage, and it'll probably stay there for the next year or two.

Also at some point I want to do a roadtrip all the way around Australia, have you looked into that? I figure in a few years when I hit 7 figs again I'll go there, buy a used jeep, and spend a year or two just driving around and camping, might even catch up on my reading.

>> No.52698724

I went solo backpacking for a month around Thailand because I was a 26 year old virgin with no life experiences and a bit of cash saved up doing nothing.

Am I glad I went? Yes. Did it change anything? Not really. It was a nice experience making it on my own in a foreign country and you're forced to interact with other travelers. It made me a lot more social and gave me some good stories to tell. I went off the beaten track and checked out as much culture as I could. Fuck being a parasite and having home comforts abroad.

It's just a fun thing to do and I would recommend it to anyone who can. I've met far more interesting people who haven't travelled further than their own county

I've never left the US, and still have not seen a large portion of it yet. As most of my trips are centered around riding, it will be a while before I go to other continents. Maybe in the next few years I'll go to mexico.

Does traveling Europe feel like a totally different experience to the US? I assumed it was pretty much the same westernized culture, but farther from home and with more nitpicky laws in most cases. Because of that assumption, I think if I were to hop on a plane and fly across an ocean I would go somewhere more different from home, like southeast Asia.

>> No.52698798

>>52698573
Yeah I think I will, because I'm traveling for a purpose. Once I've seen everything nice there is to see in, say, Rome, what's left? A city that's 40% tourists, mediocre/ancient infrastructure, and Italians with weird customs and foods. Like I wouldn't choose to live there unless I had a really good reason. Unlike, say, Vermont or New Hampshire, which are beautiful year round, but there's nothing to do there.

It also helps that this lifestyle is not exactly a vacation for me, since I'm done working. So it's not like I'm dreading going back and waging again, or sitting in an office, instead I'll be going home to visit family and when I'm not doing that, I expect to be out snowboarding.

Maybe in a decade or two I'll get a hankering to go travel again, but it won't be travel like I'm doing now, where almost every day is packed and I'm working my way through a list of places/art to see. It'd probably be more like what normalfags do for traveling, like a cruise or winery trips or something like that. And even then I would only want to do that with someone, so maybe I can get a travelthot girlfriend or something, I dunno.

>> No.52698863

>>52698769
It's western, but different. The city layouts especially are very different, and the architecture, it's just very noticeable. Nitpicky laws were minor except I managed to get myself barred from going to the gym in Italy because of a stupid law they have where a doctor has to approve you to do exercise, and the gym doctor was an idiot and thought I had a heart murmur (I don't), and wanted another $200 to send me to a specialist. Might have also just been a scam but really annoying since I was planning to lift while here.

I've been to parts of Asia but honestly I felt somewhat more at home in Manila and Singapore than I did in Rome. Not sure why that was, maybe because it was very short visits and I was in a group and in Rome I was there for a long time and on my own, but as far as the experience is I think everything's a lot more modern in Asia, even the backwater parts, simply because they don't have to accommodate 2000 years of buildings when they build there stuff.

>> No.52698910

>>52698863
I would guess going in a group gave it the "at home" feeling. Being in a strange place alone is a lot "scarier" than being there with familiar faces to fall back on.

>> No.52699038

>>52698910
Yeah, that's probably it. I can't remember worrying about my wallet at all in Asia but in Rome I was super paranoid about pickpockets. Took a couple weeks to get over it.

It’s something you may not know you like or dislike until you try it. I’ve traveled enough to understand that I leave and come back being the exact same person. I used to feel somehow refreshed at first by having some new experiences or memories from my travels. As time passes, I have come to terms that I can obtain those things without traveling anyways. So IMO traveling is overrated.

Me and my two friends went on a random road trip across the US one day.
My friend was having issues with his family and started doing some whack things. While me and my friend were having a deep talk with him, he was ready to move onto better things but he wasn’t ready to go home. Somehow, we came up with the idea that we’ll just go out west.
The next day we got in the car, brought a tent, and just drove. No google maps or set location, just driving, listening to music, stopping at random campgrounds snd staying illegally, cooking food, stopping at cool sites.
We ended having one of the most fun 2 weeks of my life, sleeping under the stars or in a tent almost every night, cooking really nice food over a fire, running into random issues and helping strangers, and absolutely 0 plan.
10/10 would recommend if you’re with chill people. I went on a road trip with another friend and he was such a pain in the ass I went home after 2 days
