I like listening to economist talk, I like reading financial times, I like to think i'm analytical person and I like to think i would enjoy working in finance(financial analyst or something alike). I have a very vague and childish understanding of it. I read what they do but reading few page description on job title and doing it everyday for 8 hours is two different things.

Is working in industry a real job ? Does it create actual value or you just scamming people as a middleman via taking commission ? With passively managed index funds and high frequency trading will the industry employ any non mathematician or ivy league graduate ?

I'm in late 30s(+ shite degree) and very average guy should i even bother ?

Optimizing cashflows is beneficial to the economy, just like optimizing the flow of physical goods is. Even a pure trading outfit provides liquidity, though there it's arguably more murky.

Finance could be a real job in a real economy. But fractional the reserve system, inflation, and handouts are encouraging irresponsible and parasitic behavior. Most investment firms don't have real responsibility. 90% of investments are just bets on real life events.
