Ho hum. Went back to work after the nice holiday break (4 days). Worked during the morning. Ate a $5.30 Hardees meal for lunch. Did "nothing" during the afternoon. Typical day. Though the day was livened up some by that young co-worker. She wore yoga pants, leggings, whatever the hell they're called. Anyway they showed off her ass very nicely. Apple presented smartwatches for sports this year (diving, mountain climbing). It's fancy and all, but competition has better battery life, which is crucial when hiking for example.
On the other hand, Apple has cult following and all of their stuff is connected pretty smoothly. So I assume that iPhone owner will prefer Apple watch over other brand, even if latter has better specs.

Congratulations, you just figured out why saying "don't hold 3x leveraged ETFs overnight!1!" is a 100% reliable midwit signal. The boilerplate arguments against 3x apply against 2x, 1x, 0.5x (50% cash), or literally any position you take in the market other than /cashgang/.

The important things to consider are what investments make sense for any given time horizon and what volatility you are able to stomach along the way. Getting heemed on a 1x semiconductor play held since last year isn't somehow smarter than holding a 3x energy ETF since the COVID low or SQQQ YTD.

Now that that's all said: your thesis of "buy and hold an index, for decades, Boglehead style" historically works out best with between 2x and 3x. However that thesis assumes we're not in for a Japan style crab in the 2020s and 2030s, which I find doubtful.

Plenty of managers beat the index before fund fees. Managers dealing with only a few million beat the index by a significant margin over time. The more capital you have, the smaller the universe of available securities gets because you need enough liquidity to support your trades. Leverage introduces volatility decay whether it's 2X or 3X. The past 3 years are an excellent example of this, since you can see that the S&P outperformed its leveraged issues. This, however, is only a short term problem. If you have the stomach for sticking to your strategy and dollar cost average into a leveraged issue of the S&P with your disposable income over the next few decades, it will most certainly outperform the regular S&P. The key here is dollar cost averaging, because when leverage is introduced, the wrong timing of a lump sum can kill decades of relative performance. Most people's disposable income would not be able to keep up with the losses sustained over this period.
>Why doesn't everyone do this instead of buying the S&P?
Simply because the time horizon of locked up capital is scary. A decade of no gains can turn into multiple decades of no gains depending on the amount of leverage. What if an emergency comes up? It's less painful to sell at -20% compared to -50% or worse.

>The biggest pushback against leveraged ETFs was always against commodity ETFs, for the record.
Well in my experience it's been against SOXL. But then again after a while I tuned out the autistic "chop chop" Pajeet and his weird drawings. And the arguments for/against commodity ETFs are separate than the ones for leveraged ETFs as a whole. Getting heemed by natural gas swings or eroded by roll yield are mentioned here waaaay less than "durr leverage decay".

I'm not sure that's the case. You just make bondholders bagholders with negative real yields. Whether GDP grows at 10% nominal/0% real or 2% nominal/2% real, a negative treasury yield erodes the debt.

that results in a liquidity crunch because nobody wants to buy that shit

And if you have a high deficit and need hundreds of billions of new bond-bagholder money constantly coming in to prop up the fiscal spending, you will get rekt. And getting the federal reserve to print the money will result in catastrophically high M2 expansion.

Japan is trying this strategy and their debt is growing way faster than inflation because an aging and shrinking population is super deflationary no matter how much money you print.

Part of it is specifically in the labor market. Labor market inflation

e.g. I get charged more in my life, so I start charging more for my labor or find an employer to pay me more. With high inflation, I have to do that more often and so does everyone else.

in the 1970s, markets weren't as fast/efficient. Now, I can start charging more as quick as possible. pricing is much more dynamic and I think labor market inflation will be faster/stickier
