It evened out because I got a rare coin from a lucky dip they were offering but holy shit man, sticking with local online dealers from now on. Is it normal to be charged so much by in-person dealers? Does /pmg/ only recommend them because you can pay cash and remain relatively anonymous?

He could tell I was a complete beginner so it's very possible I got grifted. But for example (I'm a Britfag) Atkinsons sell Britannias, which I will be mostly stacking because they're tax free and I'm not too interested in numismatics, for just 2-3% over spot. I really doubt that a local dealer would ever beat or even match that. I also move around the country frequently due to work so having a rooted network of local stackers isn't likely to happen.

If you walked into a turn of the century grocery store or whatever place you bought bread and fish or beef or chicken from what could you walk out with? I just can't wrap my mind around the fact that people used to carry gold around with them to buy everyday things.

I know that feel though, my LCS sells junk at like 33xFV like a bunch of jews. It makes sense though because at regular pricing they would just be blown out of their inventory within a week, The paper price is comically wrong.

I have come to the conclusion, that precious metals are a worse investment than stocks. However, they are physical, which means they are the best investment to gift somebody, because if you give them cash, then they'll just spend it. If you give them a silver coin then they might get interested in the price of gold, and hence in investing overall. Although I don't intend on hoarding all of my savings in silver. I plan on keeping a few coins on myself at any time to have a nice special financial gift for the ones I care about.

Why are there premiums on precious metals rather than the market price being X% higher? Does the premium applying to physical metal and not ETFs mean there is just a different market value for each (so 1 troy ounce of physical silver is worth 80% more than a silver backed ETF representing 1 troy ounce)? Hello friends.

I find all this quite interesting. Yet honestly I don't have the time nor motivation to read about coins and bars and numismatic shit.
I enjoy splurging on the miss though, what do you think about jewelry as a value storage?
I understand the premium on melt is much higher because of the craftsmanship involved yet there are some options that aren't that bad (solid gold armbands or basic chains) and they have the advantage of being able to be worn
Any of you have experience with that ?

Thing is I'm more afraid of burglary than financial collapse ATM and having guns doesn't help if they break in while I'm not here.

The secure location would be a safe at my house. Which is fine until we have to travel. I have a good security system but we know of friends with similar security that got robbed in our city
The guys basically stole the whole safe after unsealing it from the wall (wasn't a big safe).
The kind of safe immune to that would cost at least as much as what I plan to put into it

Same problem still applies if I had coins or bars.
Renting a safe at a bank to store shit while we are away ?
At the moment we.leave everything at a relative house (I also have a couple swiss watches) but they feel increasingly uneasy about the responsibility, which i understand

Having a safe is a way to tell robbers "something good is here." And being in a city, I don't think the security system is gonna do anything. Since you have a security system robbers will likely be in and out in a short period due to the alarm sounding, so they are just looking for stuff that is easily noticeable and grabbable. i browsed around quite a bit and the best deal youll find on jewelry is around 100% spot give or take. you can only get prices like this if you get 22k jewelry and the places are indian usually. saraf has decent prices i think but its been a while so i dont remember names very well. you can get a nice 22k bangle that doesnt look so indian in style (thats the problem with buying 22k stuff is that it all looks very indian all bedecked in shitty quality rubies or a necklace so large it envelopes the entire declete and costs 20 thousand dollars, if you shop around you will seewhat i mean)

i would avoid 24k jewelry like what is sold on sd bullion or mene, some 24 k ear rings might be alright but the craftsmanship is lacking and the metal is so soft, it will get dinged up.

18k is a nice medium % i think too but a lot of indian stuff that is good prices is 22k and if youre looking at any mainstream outlet like kay or zales they will charge 400-500% over than the gold value or even more. indian places give you a weight in grams usually so you can take 22/24 x the weight to see how much the gold value is and how much youre spending on craftsmanship, store overhead , etc

this is all just my personal opinion

I buy PMs on what I call "the most boring case scenario" which is just "Gold and silver are pumped artificially low for the next ten years like the have been for the past thirty years, yet keep up with inflation despite that". You are not going to convince "the majority" to buy gold now. The majority isn't going to lose faith in fiat until it is too late for them. Sad but true.

And stackers don't need to convince anyone to buy metals. It isn't a "greater fool" investment like stocks and crypto. It's a bet on the momentum of 3000 years of continuous global human appreciation of gold and silver surviving the collapse of the existing hollow shell of a world economy. Concerning yourself with what gold has done in the last two years is like wondering about the future of shoes because Nike had a bad quarter.

I'll leave the "Every stacker will have 100 virgin brides once China nukes us" stuff for others, and I was told repeatedly before investing not to look at it as something that would make me a millionaire so I didn't mean to give that impression. What I mean is, how do you convince people when they see the price of an ounce of gold and ask what the fuck you're doing buying something that expensive when it's "bound to go down soon"? Laypeople I've spoken to see the rise over the last three years and conclude that it's bound to collapse or at least go back to normal once all of the current economic troubles are over, or at least have become normal, so why bother investing now?

I was something of a normalfag about money before I held gold for the first time and suddenly realised that I had real money in my hands for the first time in my life, so I know it can happen to other people and save them too. But how do you convince them right now at this moment when the price is so high and seems to be tottering?

I'm shocked that the "laypeople" you have spoken to have even the slightest idea about gold one way or another. Half of Americans still think that the dollar is backed by gold. You simply are not going to convince them that they need to flee the debt bubble and take refuge in hard assets because the average person is totally absorbed by whatever shit the mainstream media is shoveling.

Are you looking for someone to make a case for gold to rise in dollar valuation in the next few years? Because I don't think anyone can make that prediction and I'm about as bullish about gold as one can be.

I don't think of Gold being expensive, I think of everything else being so shit Gold is pretty much at what its normal price has always been. And with how many banks and governments are buying gold I can promise it is NOT going down. Silver maybe, but absolutely not gold.
I mean look at inflation. It costs me $40 to get a bag of groceries that aren't complete trash. A fucking normal jar of Peanut butter is $6. SIX DOLLARS FOR PEANUT BUTTER! Half the federal minimum wage for what was once a cheapfag food staple.
The dollar is so fucked we went from
>1 uneducated man working supported a family comfortably
>now it's 1 educated man working to support a family comfortably
>man and woman now both have to work for a decent lifestyle
>man and woman now need a college education or get lucky for a decent lifestyle
>man and woman now need college education, sometimes have to get two jobs, and most families are at a paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle
AND by basically every account it's only going to get worse. (((Coincidentally))) all of these changes line up with the major US inflation periods and currency debasement. If someone can't understand inflation, they can't understand nor deserve precious metals. The Fed, an empire's sovereignty, the crimes of the central banks, the powers that be and such are all important redpills but the most practical and observable crux, being inflation MUST be understood first.

In a sense. I'm 100% confident that we are in the end times and I won't bother trying to convince people if they can't already sense that something is wrong, but the question I have trouble answering is "Why buy it right now when it will probably plummet in a few months or years? What's the rush?"

Say I convince someone that fiat is Satan, actually manage to get them to understand inflation and why it's a big deal that half the dollars in existence were printed since the lockdown economic massacre began. What do I tell them when they say "Well yeah, sure I'll invest, but why would I buy now when gold's at an all-time high?" Why right now at this exact moment if there's uncertainty over whether gold will go up in the next ten years or so? You can obviously point to its historic value, but plenty of people believe that this 2020-Present crisis is unique in history and that things will eventually be fixed.

Sorry if this seems like concern troll FUD. I'm just having trouble coming to terms with it myself. I wish I'd seen the light and invested sooner, and now that I've started when metals are at their highest I can't help but feel like a dupe even though gold is almost guaranteed to keep its value and appreciate slightly over the next few decades.

And there really is no quick way to explain the situation. You need to talk about the history of the dollar at least as far back as FDR's demonetization, and Bretton Woods, and the closing of the gold window, and the USA dumping its inflated dollars on the world, using that position to exchange toilet paper for goods. And how the USA is the world's bully and has weaponized the dollar, how half the world would like to kick the USA to the curb. How China has trillions of dollars that it is starting to dump and probably using to buy gold. How central banks all over the world are stacking gold at historic levels. How the BRICS are preparing to launch a currency to compete with the dollar and how it will probably be at least in part backed by gold. And that's really just the beginning. You need to talk about how the entire US economy is like a house of cards held up by debt. Explain how the USD actually comes into existence as a debt. Etc. Etc.

It isn't simple. People here tend to be very well-read in history and economics. That's why they are here. And if you hang around you will learn something. I know I have, and I thought I knew a few things before I got here.

Picrel has a great history of gold and money. I highly recommend it. The second half of the book about investing in gold stocks is outdated. And this series of videos is pretty good for explaining how the modern monetary system works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyV0OfU3-FU

My issue has never been "am I going to make money on pms in the next few years?" The starter guide is fucking retarded and probably made by a kike.
Don't buy gold first and buy silver from any reputable dealer from the list. Jmbullion, apmex, sdbullion are the big ones but kind of pricier. Then there's bullionexchanges, silvergoldbull, boldpreciousmetals (my personal fav).
Ebay there's the scottsdale silver store and the liberty coin store. Both reputable and usually priced well.
Lcs is a ripoff 99% of the time, if you even have one nearby.

When you buy PMs, your fiat cash just changes hands to someone else, who will use it to feed the beast by buying up more assets.

Anyone buying assets other than pms now - real estate, stocks, bonds - is in for a very unpleasant surprise. So let them have the fiat. And when those debt-addicted markets collapse, staggering amounts of fiat will vanish into thin air. But perhaps YOU have a better place to put wealth than PMs. Do tell.

There are multiple benefits to having wealth under your control. A big one is the ability to hand it down to your progeny to give them a leg up in the world. That means finding a place in the meantime to park it that appears likely to weather the economic and social storms I think are at hand. A study of history makes the case for PMs in this role rather blatant. Things that humans have valued for more than three thousand years will probably retain their value for a few hundred more at least.

Of course there are other uses of wealth, and some require currency more liquid than pms. Very few people here would suggest rendering yourself entirely impecunious in pursuit of the stack. We all need cash on hand to pay the bills. But that isn't what you seem to be talking about (although vaguely). You seem to think that keeping discretionary wealth in the form of fiat money is a better idea than keeping it in pms. I disagree. I think pms are the best way to protect discretionary wealth for the future. My future and the future of my grandchildren.

Shiny metals are the most desirable money. Yes I understand in this day and age most people believe money to be green bits of paper, or even worse digits in a checking account. However none of that changes the fact that precious metals are the most widely accepted kind of money world wide.

If anybody is dumping excess cash in gold or silver, they are 'saving' money, one of the most responsible things a person can do. There is still a use for dollars but we do not know how long that may be. All dollars are depreciating by about 10% per year, and have been for decades. That to me explains the increase in stock and equities prices over time as the value of the dollar goes down because of inflation.

So many people (Americans especially) don't understand the difference between a political system (democracy, autocracy, theocracy) and an economic system (communism, capitalism, mixed economic systems like fascism). So they think that when you point out that China is in no way a communist country (obviously true) they think you are in some way saying it is not still a terrible dictatorship. It's muddled thinking.

The Communist party abandoned communist economics after Mao died because they were smart enough to realize that it doesn't work. But they in no way abandoned autocratic authoritarianism. They instituted private property and private enterprise because they could see that was the only way to prosperity, but they kept it under strict government control.

I don't even have any lunar coins, they're kind of expensive and not that great. I also don't have any american (US) coins either, and I don't really want any because they're kind of shit for the price. I'll probably get one panda though, because they're kind of cool. Might even get a libertad.

I would suggest that anyone holding real money hold onto that money until it can be used as a means of direct exchange. Selling gold or silver for fiat and being taxed for the privilege of doing so is a losing battle as far as I'm concerned. It is a different scenario for each person obviously, but the government is going to fuck you over if you play only by their edicts, even if you where responsible and they where not. Just out of principle we should not comply with the governments economic controls. It really is just funding your enemies who really want you dead. I'm not exaggerating when I say your government wants you dead but will settle for your compliance.

I hate to sound like a good goy, I do agree with your stance on the government. My statement on compliance is more toward the specific case of researching what you buy. In the sense of if you're a Euro buy VAT free silver or if you're a Burger try to buy Gold Eagles because they have tax exemptions other gold doesn't.
By the way fuck the government, Canada just put out an ad for medically assisted suicide. A COMMERCIAL to sell you DEATH. It literally can't get more dystopian than that.

>I just think the US Pre-1933 Gold is cool as hell,
Me too. Pretty common sentiment but it's like that for a reason. Best designs ever + they're all gold. Wish they'd bring back some of the designs. Imagine a one oucner incuse injun or even one of the liberty head eagles.
So far we've only gotten the Saint Gaudens design back and the liberty head eagle reverse on a $5 commemorative for 2007 I believe. Unless they've brought more back that I'm unaware of.
To be honest, I'm not sure why in 86, they just didn't restrike the pre 33 coins again (similar to other countries restriking classic coins) instead of making every denomination have the gaudens design. Uniformity I suppose. No disrespect to the gaudens design either.

any thoughts on buying some fake / plated gold coins to have as ornaments/toys? I've seen stuff on alibaba for about $2/coin which is not bad, but I feel like it wouldn't be worth it if they become obviously scratched or lose the coat easily if toyed with.

normally I keep a few silver coins on my desk to fidget with, but I've been hankering some gold and I feel like real stuff is too expensive to use for fidgeting
