52630229 No.52630229 [Reply] [Original]

Today (27th November 2022) is the 1 year anniversary of when I deployed Super Mario 64 to a canister on the internet computer. I have re-deployed it for only 48 hours so that anons can remember the good times of buying ICP at $40.

Here's a link to the Super Mario 64 Canister:
https://culg2-qyaaa-aaaai-qa7sa-cai.raw.ic0.app/

This is not hard to do on web2, but 1 year ago I thought it would be a cool idea.
Here's a link to web2's Super Mario 64 (where I got my inspiration/stole the code from):
https://augustberchelmann.com/mario/

Here's a link to the dfinity forum where they proposed to take down my canister.
https://forum.dfinity.org/t/upcoming-proposal-and-discussion-on-content-moderation/9424

The canister was going to be deleted if I took no action. I chose to take down the Super Mario 64 content after I talked to someone about it. Then dfinity voted to keep the canister up. Back in the day when dfinity voted, it would always result in what dfinity wanted. We've come a long way decentralization bros. I think there's at least 4x the number of named neurons.

Now this makes me actualy bullish as fuck. The performance is top notch. 30 fps, no artifacts or typical emulator yankiness. Savestates are preserved between session.

Just one question. Where is the game actually emulated? In the browser on my pc or somewhere backend in a canister? I was monitoring my task manager and I didn't see any cpu usage. I'm not really a tech guru, sorry for my noob question

>> No.52635660

>>52635455
This game is actually not emulated and that's why it runs so well. This is a decompiled version of Super Mario 64 which was recomplied with emscripten.org to the .wasm filetype. It is downloaded from the internet computer blockchain and your browser just executes the .wasm file instructions locally in your browser. Javascript is used to capture your keyboard inputs. This is all already possible on web2 as noted in the OP. What is possible with this is that someone could create a game in the .wasm filetype that enables ICP transactions within the game natively and that would be very cool.

I'm not scared of what will happen to me. If I leave it up my canister will probably be deleted. I want to keep this canister because it has history. If I wanted to "prove" that copyrighted content will get removed(spoiler: it will get removed) I could do that with a separate canister. This is just a celebration of what happened one year ago.

One day the IC will hopefully be immune to DMCA takedown notifications, but it is not this day.

dfinity was not going to vote and they would have left it up to the community. Last I checked before I removed the content the votes were something along the lines of 4 million voting power to remove the canister to 40k voting power to keep the canister alive. A canister is a smart contract on the internet computer. Dfinity chose to name smart contracts on their platform canisters because their canisters contain a bundle of code and data as opposed to smart contracts which only contain code. There are also other differences to traditional smart contracts.

NFTs on the internet computer could be changed by the owner of the canister who owns the NFT. The only NFT on the internet computer that is truly safe is a black-holed canister which controls the assets. To my knowledge there are no NFTs which have black-holed canisters. Even on the internet computer I think that NFTs are fragile. Hell, the ICTurtles (NFT) canister ran out of cycles and got completely pruned from the internet computer a few months ago.
