My observation is that a great deal of home owners develop no savings to retire and just re-mortgage and remain debt slaves until they die, the final orgy of re-mortgage being for medical bills. You feel smug and accomplished because you have some shitty building (I do to) and you feel 'grown up' you are at that age where people try having dinner parties and discover they are shit. You think you are the smart one but you are carrying debt behind your fragile smile, credit card debt, property debt, auto loan debt, student debt so here is you future. The child gets sick, the wife develops mental illness or cheat, the redundancy happens, the tax miscalculation, the, kid gets caught with weed or pills and the legal bills start rolling in, the payment on the mortgage does not get made.
