I think the brokers' back offices are raging infernos of people who know exactly how much GME they sold while never actually buying the shares on behalf of the investors. The disconnect between obligations and the true scarcity of the shares will be coming to a head sooner rather than later.
Think about it. From a practical standpoint, if a retail investor wanted to buy into a failed company, why would the brokers want to waste their money going and buying up some trash equities. It makes sense that they would see "shorting" as the optimal solution for them so they do not have to go and baghold. This is true because the payment for order flow allows them to operate on a different level than what a broker should be doing for its clients.
I think it is obvious that the abuse of securities/trading as well as the abuse of the fiat money system is reaching their limits. The functionality of these markets has been twisted and distorted to maximize "insider" profits at the behest of whatever functional purpose they serve. Even consider the fact that there is a $2TN repo market. It all alludes to paper-ponzi levels of asset abuse, and only in this instance did their financial-machinations finally blow up in their face. And this is going to cascade as the contagion spreads. The main thing to note here is that a loss of confidence in EVERYTHING is on the line here. The government and Fed can't just bail out everyone, and they can't keep letting Wallstreet plunder everything while we find out they just destroyed teacher's pension plans. We'll find out soon enough, I suppose. But this feels like a very big deal given how hard they are trying to hide it all.
