He wants employees who will dedicate themselves to work and (no matter WHAT level employee they are) that will try to make a difference for the business. For most people who work for corporations where this effort will never be rewarded, this is bad advice. It is understandable, as Dave has been a business owner far longer than he h as been an employee, and I doubt he has spent much time working a dead end job where effort is not worth the time.
