The UVXY long is a bit risky since technically it can fall forever, but longing SVXY every time it dips appears to have a very high success rate. You're basically just betting that when the market gets spooked it will eventually calm down again.

whats the down side of news trading in stock?

as a Forex trader, News trading is always complicated.

-the calendar news like CPI, NFP, etc... are basically impossible to trade as the liquidity fucks off, you end up with high spread and potential slippage making the whole thing unprofitable

>whats the down side of news trading in stock?
like earnings? you have to make an accurate prediction with the business itself while also remaining macro-aware of outside forces that could wreck your trade even if your call was right. also options become more expensive the closer you get to earnings because implied volatility goes up

you CANNOT effectively trade stocks without knowing what the FX and Bond markets are doing. here is the hierarchy of trading and shit rolls downhill:

1. Currencies
2. Bond yields
3. Stocks
4. Commodities (this can be #3 if the stock your trading depends on the price of an underlying commodity, like oil)
5. Crypto

False.

Example: Walmart's recent earnings were saved entirely by its grocery sales.

Knowing this, and knowing that Target has no grocery sales, made shorting Target on earnings day an obvious play.

No knowledge of FX, bond markets or literally anything required, as they are of equal import for both the Wal-Mart and Target sides of the equation (i.e. they come out in the wash). When using comparative analysis between companies this is always the case.

People like the gig taxi idea, but the companies incinerate money on dumb stuff. The case for UBER/LYFT now is they either stop recklessly spending and let thier moats carry them to profitability or they go bankrupt. Highly shorted companies stay afloat for longer than people expect because there are no longs to sell the stock down, just sellers who buy to close (squeezing the stock up) and predatory factor/HFT funds who try to squeeze the stocks.

Anyways, UBER and LYFT are absolutely still viable shorts. I am short UBER since 2021 and it's been a relatively rewarding short, just need to tiptoe around the volatility by selling some premium, otherwise if you have delta 1 short shares its a solid short.

UBER lost $680M pre-tax in the 2021 4Q, ex-gains. FCF was still negative in FY 2021, despite inflows of $1.7B f/working capital and $1.2B f/SBC (!) Working capital is now negative. Still a dumpster fire, before “adjustments”. Fucking UBER, total shitco. The milkbreaths don't ever listen though.

that's a good example and i agree, but what i'm talking about is something like this:

>company beats earnings, stock gets bid up
>at the same time, the DXY is crashing, causing all stocks in general to go up

this would put more wind behind the sails of the stock your trading and it will likely be bid up even further. this matters more in the mid-term trades like 1 week - 3 months. i'm not really talking about a 1-day earnings-only play. if you want to buy a stock and hold it for a couple of months, the dollar and bond yields come into play

That's just how every company works. You need to borrow money to make money. Debt is not always a bad thing if you're actually making a ton of revenues like big tech. But it can be terrible for profitless companies.

UBER was not “profitable” this in Q3 2022 (again) because they lost almost another half a billion dollars ($495M) from operations in the 3Q. These "operations" are just a whole mix of different gigride related costs and employee expenses, etc.. >no, i mean like unexpected breaking news

you would have to make a quick decision whether you're in or out. pic related is what happened to Lockheed Martin stock when the Ukraine war first broke out. it pumped for 7 out of 8 days straight before selling off and if you bought the stock on day 1 or 2 - you could have made a nice +20-30% or so. if you used call options you probably could have +300% or more easily. maybe +1000%

you just have to determine for yourself how big of a deal the breaking news is and you have to execute quickly because the market will price it in quickly and you need to monitor it closely. the stock will probably overshoot as well so you dont want to get too greedy and probably want some tight stop-losses if you're sitting on nice profit

Security Analysis is a good introduction as you said, other ones give an insight on how fund managers view stock market, what they find to be important, what traps to avoid. Practical knowledge. I think it's important to understand basics and language of investing in order to get full benefit from such books.

I also reccomend Flirting with Models channel

>In summary, the RSI provided better-than-random signals for price reversals at each level tested, and the signal was better at more extreme levels. However, the reward-to-risk characteristics of the short, "overbought" trades are not favorable, except at the most extreme level.

Basically, even if used with other indicators, there's no signal to RSI. Except at like RSI levels like 95 and 5 (which are extreme levels that have often never been reached in a stocks entire lifetime), there's no directional signal to RSI

Please stop using RSI, it tells you NOTHING ,even if used with other indicators.

your study was done on RSI in a vacuum and didn't even consider fundamentals. your method was to exit RSI when it returned to 50.

what if you shorted a stock at 90 and exited if it returned to 70? you could make profit on that trade even though it never left the overbought zone

your bot also bought stocks that were oversold without considering the fundamentals on why that company is oversold. take Silvergate Capital, for example. this RSI is around 20. your bot would have bought the stock just because of the RSI, but in reality there is a good fucking reason SI is oversold - because they're a crypto bank related to FTX which just blew up

SI is "oversold" and i'm shorting the stock shares anyway cuz this shit might go to 0 because of the FTX fraud

your study has some methodology problems because it lacks the ability to consider RSI + fundamentals

>While the overall semiconductor industry is experiencing softening business conditions, as we enter 2023, we at SkyWater believe our business is relatively decoupled from the drivers of overall macro weakness. This is due to our unique business model, in which R&D programs and strategic long-term investments drive the majority of our revenues, as well as our focus on end markets and applications that continue to experience strong levels of investment. Furthermore, we believe we are particularly well-positioned to benefit from the increased level of investments in the domestic semiconductor ecosystem that are expected to strengthen through the remainder of the decade.

Oil bros. Ahem, BEARS. Let's talk about it. Where do you see XOM in two months? I don't see it necessarily at 85, but maybe 100, 95. Right now it's on support at $110, which was broken today, but then was quickly returned to. The longer barrel price stays this low, the less profits companies may ultimately achieve.

As for heating oil, do you think people may begin to cut down on heating expenses by wearing sweatshirts indoors? Hoodies? Snuggies? Blankets? How many of us are doing this right now? This is unquantifiable, but it's not nonsense. Oil is going down.

Apparently, yes. I checked Exxon's website for this. But don't quote me on how they get their heating oil. I wouldn't be surprised if big conglomerates like Exxon can provide heating oil while others don't. Occidental Petroleum, for example, doesn't seem to proffer this on their website.

But yet Crude keeps going down. Even with this OPEC+, Russia, and China news all on the same day, all it did was return to the price it was yesterday.

that depends volume. high volume = no spread. if you're worried about slippage - you can use a "limit buy" order so that it only buys it at the price you set and no higher
