Hmmm. I am very poorly educated in any of this, but here's what I did. My son is in a program where he gets to invest on their dime and keep the gains. The man who runs the program does some kind of screener on the S&P and offers about 120 to select from, but I cannot spot an obvious criteria. The only number I looked at was the P/E and you are right on with what I did which was try to stick to under 15. Then I took all of those and looked at their curves at various zooms and selected ones that seemed to be on an overall upward trend while being at that moment in something of a valley. I tried to look at all of their lows spanning the entire post 2010 bubble and select one that seemed to be as close to that repeating low as possible while still showing a long term upward trend. We are always dealing with hard deadlines to make a choice so it's pretty much pick something and run with it as best as possible at the time, with only a few days to do the research.

So far those 5 stocks are up about 30% but were doing a lot better before Jan 2022 hit and started the bear, but they are still up about 15% YTD.

Anyway, I am not a knowledgeable person but 5/5 picks being green and a min of +13 seems to indicate the method works ok, but I wish I could tell you what the screeners are that the man uses to select the 120 choices. I know for a fact that there are a lot of losers in them so even choosing from those narrowed choices is critical.

The s&p 500 only invests in profitable companies, and has a minimum market cap by nature of the fund being the 500 biggest companies in the us market. So in that sense it is similar to my screener, but with large caps. He is probably using an additional filter that limits high beta or something to minimize his risk.

For what it's worth, my dad has about 1500 pennies from 1943. Even shitty grade ones can go for 10-15c to a buyer, but where's the demand for those ones? A good condition one has about 30c of numismatic value.
Those pennies have something like 3.2g of copper in them. We did the math and the price of copper needs to go up like 5x before melting them down would be viable

Managed futures have been around for a while, just more common as mutual funds than ETFs.
That said, FMF has been around since 2014 so it's not exactly super new.

It's not a bad pick if you're trying to reduce portfolio beta, but the active management style usually means higher fees (and risk of the fund manager fucking up).

CTA seems decent if you're looking hedge. Just be aware that this year will likely an unusual return for the fund. Normally Long/Short funds are positioned for smaller returns but more safety from overall market moves.

The bond is denominated in CAD and your counterpary is Canada if Ukraine can't pay.
If it was unsecured or denominated in UAH, then you'd expect higher yield because of currency risk / counterparty risk.
But since it's not, the rates have to be the same.
If the rate was higher it would be arb'd instantly because you could just short Canadian debt and buy the Ukrainian debt in equal denominations.
