I'm also with Questrade. Stocks are $4.95 to $9.90 per trade, etfs have no buy cost, but the sell cost is $9.90 or something, and options are $9.95 + $1/contract
I'd recommend buying etfs to accumulate positions and take profits once in a while. Only trade individual stocks if there's enough of a potential move. I'm long uranium and writing CCs against it for some extra income. I have both a TFSA and a margin account. My long holds are in TFSA, while my risky plays are in margin (can claim capital losses).
QT also offers some kind of way to link margin with TFSA accounts; I'm approved for level 4 options (writing uncovered spreads) and use my TFSA as collateral. I manage trades for my dad and I have no risk of maxing out my contribution room anytime soon, therefore I can use it as collateral to enable the spreads ($25,000 minimum). Of course, I'm not writing naked calls on TSLA or retarded things like that. It'll be a very small position with perhaps $300 downside, but I like to have the ability to trade how I want.
