why the fuck can't they just list numbers?

They did retard. Check the bureau of labor statistics for that job or glassdoor.
When you enter the interview, refuse to commit to a number. Then if you get an offer and they lowball you, throw the statistics you found back at them.

they could, but then nobody would apply. think of all the perks, surely they make up for the below average pay, right?

That makes no fucking sense. There is usually a huge range, im sure whatever lowball they toss at you falls within the bottom 10% of whatever shitty statistic you can find.

Boomer managers love to do this. Make it unknown whether or not it pays well. They think its some kind of test. Its fucking stupid and 90% of the time you find out it pays $16 an hour and you completely wasted your time.
Though other 10% the pay can actually be higher than rest of market.

if it pays well, it adds to the 'mystique' of the company, if it doesn't the public doesn't get to know about it

If the recruiter refuses to give a range in the first reply, I block and move on to the next one.

Why even bother interviewing if you don't know the pay range? Is your time worth that little?
