ANYTHING ELSE!
I have an account on most major exchanges, but I see literally no reason to use coinbase other than to refer people like pic related who can't wrap their head around what an order book is.

they're the same operation, GDAX is just Coinbase for adults.
Gemini is probably the most trustworthy if that is what you are concerned about. If you are okay with the Tether scheme, Bitfinex is also an option. Then Bittrex, Kraken, and Poloniex would be the next tier down - lower volume, they all carry Tether, and they all have faced accusations of shady operations.
If you have South Korean/Japanese banking access, you will want to look into these exchanges although there may be a price premium there, that presents a great arbitrage opportunity.
The next tier after this would be ones like Binance and Kucoin - even sketchier than above but they work fine and are actively focused on expanding so they're full of issues but tend to adapt faster.
Next would be mainland Chinese exchanges, they seem to be the shadiest of all at least before sewer tier. Known for questionable things going on behind the scenes, fake volume, wash trading.
Last and certainly least would be shit hole exchanges in dirt countries with no clear operators. I would probably put HitBTC in this tier but people seem to get offended when I do this. They are okay, but their support is shit and their withdrawal fees are highway robbery. They carry scams like BitConnect and the bar to listing seems fairly low. Yobit belongs in this tier too. Almost everything there is a shitcoin, except $ESP. Espers on Yobit is probably the best investment you could make. That's all I'll say about that, do your own research into it.

If you aren't American, look into the local exchanges in your country. Most of them will be better options for you when it comes to fiat exchanges than using any of the above options.
