what's best practice to store crypto without hardware wallet?
i'm in a shithole and can't get a hardware wallet quickly
want to buy new smarphone and install Trustwallet on it. put the smartphone away and dont use it.
safe recovery phrase on a password manager without the last 2-3 words and store the last words somewhere else
how redarded is this plan?

Smartphones provide more utility than a pure hw wallet. Personally if you can you could buy one of those meme phones with a HW wallet feature, but if you want to save on money, buy the cheapest phone from a reputable brand like samsung

It's a good idea anon, Just back up your seed words on paper so if the phone is ever damaged you can recover everything.
No need for a new phone. Just use the old phone for this and your new phone for day to day use.

Just download electrum, install it on a device that you don't connect to the net, make your wallet, send your crypto to that wallet, done. That's assuming you have Bitcoin. I don't know about eth but don't use metamask, it's owned by a company and they could fuck with your crypto.
