Starting a job as a cashier today.

How do I count change?

>> No.524185

It's not difficult. Go from high to low (e.g. if the change is $11.58, give one ten, one one, two quarters, a nickel, and three pennies).
Source: I used to be a head cashier.

My old roommate didn't have a checking account so he paid me in cash and I gave the rental company a check. Bonus: I got the tax incentives for the total amount.

OP here, yah the machine just tells you the change

>mfw I make $16 a hour

>> No.525013

This is basically it nowadays >>524185 since you just punch everything into the machine and it does all the math for you. Years ago we used to just count backwards from the price and hand the money out as you go.

If you have to give $11.58 in change from a purchase of $8.42 paid with a $20 bill, count from $8.42 up to the full twenty. 42+3 (pennies) equals 45, plus 5 cents (one nickel) equals 50, plus 50 cents (2 quarters) equals one dollar, so that's your coinage. You hand this over and start counting from $9 in paper money. 9 + 1 equals 10, so that's one single, and then $10 more is twenty so you're done. Make sure to say what the new value is each time you put add money in to the sum, so you'd be saying something like "that's nine (hand over the coins), ten (hand over the single), and twenty (hand over the ten dollar bill)." Lay all the bills on top of one another quickly or you'll look like you have Down's.

Congrats, now you can impress everyone over the age of 60. Plus, it's basically impossible to fuck up.
