Its only meaningful distinction from regular charity is fighting their imaginary fight against imaginary doomsday AI. Otherwise, it's the same pablum about global warming, etc.
Rationalism basically treats future AI as the forthcoming new god, and they treat themselves as that deity's priesthood. They dwell in terms of secular theology on what a "good" AI would do for humanity, and on the flipside, the improvement of humanity by bringing human thinking closer to their idea of perfect machine logic. For this, they were the among the earliest adopters of drinking Soilent (yes, really), because wasting time to cook is irrational, of polyamory, because monogamy is irrational, trannyism because biological gender is irrational, etc. By these fruits you will know them, among other insane religious convictions like the simulation hypothesis.
If you don't already know about Roko's basilisk, read about it. That's the kind of mind virus that these people concoct for themselves.
