Depends on the private college. I went to a small private Catholic college that is well known in the area for business. It was worth it for many of the business graduates to "get their foot in the door" during a recession. I was not a business student and quickly realized I could get a better degree at a state school in my chosen field for 1/5 the cost. I made a good choice transferring.

If you want to pump your chances for getting in a good grad school you should do an internship or two in your desired field during summers while an undergrad. Private colleges are one of the biggest scams in existence. Liberal arts education means nothing, and 99% of private colleges have zero name value. The ones that do (Duke, Vanderbilt, Ivy's, etc.) you've heard of and may be worth a premium depending on what you want to do.

But you're far better off going to a state school for cheap and not getting in major debt. Also no one gives a shit what school you went to a few years in the workforce. State schools also have larger and more powerful alumni bases
