Guys I just got back from my friends new apartment where he lives (high up).

They literally can't because the shorts pose infinite risk, paired with the impossible levels of derivatives counterparty risk on their books. This is not merely a "too big to fail bailout" like in 2008. This is these guys being trapped in a short trade and then leveraging up to purposefully making themselves a systemic risk to everyone else via swaps, options etc. Because if Citadel is allowed to die, their losses cascade and are FORCED to be bought up by other institutions who have not taken proper risk management precautions for the positions. The counterparty nature of derviatives, along with the counterparty risks of bonds etc will probably kill everyone. They ideally wanted everyone to be short the market so they could crash it and then reflate and inject capital into the economy that way, but pinning the shorts in their short trade and forcing them to continue shorting and exacerbating the problem has created a fatal situation here.
