The first book in this series is 10x worse than any of the others, it’s existence really is a shame IMO because it probably turns off people before they get to some of the greatest set pieces and plot devices in fantasy history like chain of dogs karsa orlong ghost cavemen technoraptors etc

The first book in OPs pic is just incredibly dense generic fantasy

Tried reading the first book years ago and got bored and dropped it after 40 pages. You're saying it gets better?

The 2nd and 4th books are my favorites from the whole series, if you don’t like the second you won’t like the rest. Yes IMO it’s some of the most enjoyable fantasy there is and the books are really long so you can get lost in the world for years, like a non pussy version of wheel of time. You can skip the first book without missing anything

I did wonder if it was a larp. The 3 vax comment did seem a bit on the edge. I’m taking him on his word. IF he did he’s an idiot.

I love you so much, anon, you have no idea.
Gonna read directly the second one then.

And I tried Wheel of Time as well but my God, it was such banal, childish shit I dropped it after 30 pages. Which gives me hope, we seem to have fairly similar tastes, so I'm prolly gonna enjoy Malazan.

Just to avoid reading the wrong 800 pages books by mistake, we're talking about "Deadhouse Gates" and "House of Chains", right?
Because there are several series set in that universe.

anon, if you have patience, malaz is the pinnacle of epic fantasy

it does get veery slow around book 8, but it doesn't have an equivalent imho
also once you read the latter books, say around book 9, you can return to book 1.

i hated it the first time, once i re read it after finishing the arc it made more sense

t. malaz maximalist, re read the series 3 times

Without memeing, what about Bakker? Heard great things about him as well but haven't tried him yet.

>> No.52329818

>>52329671
bakker is gritty, dark, violent and balls to the wall. he writes well, and quite realistic

however to me erikson is more nuanced and has a wider spectrum of concepts, moods, characters and their philosophies etc
you get something close to bakker (Karsa Orlong who youll meet mid series, to some extent) but theres also so much more
