From what I can tell, based on the Kelly criterion a vertical spread should basically always risk 20% since they are always 1:1 odds (the price of the spread changes dynamically to keep them that way). So even if you have a 80% chance of winning, the spread magnitude adjusts to make up for the odds.

tl:dr if I'm understanding this correctly vertical spreads should always be at 20% risk.

That's really good to know, thanks for saving me from the headache of figuring that out. It's happened to me before, but I didn't understand exactly what was happening.

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but this is an example order for SPY right now on tastyworks.

Yes, this is what I learned about it from, it does a great job at explaining the concept: https://www.patreon.com/posts/48056543

>>52225638
I'm saving this post for next time I feel like I'm wasting my buying power by selling. That makes a lot of sense, I really didn't appreciate the downsides of option buying there. I feel like you could take less of a risk on magnitude if you sold them at a later expiration, but then the volatility wouldn't be as high.

>>52225733
I'm not following exactly, what do you mean that they are at 1:1 odds? I picked 25% of my buying power because that puts roughly a 20% risk even on the biggest movements due to intrinsic value. It sounds like you are talking about the options themselves which intrigues me.

Well I could be wrong but basically options already have odds calculated into them in the price of the option. Adjusted for the risk/reward ratio a vertical spread is always a 1:1 ratio. For example a vertical spread with an 80% chance of winning will tend to pay out 20% if you win and 80% if you lose (roughly speaking), while a 70% chance of winning will tend to pay 30% if you win and so forth (a 50% chance of winning will tend to pay out 50%). The chance to win and the payout % will always come out in the wash. That's why I say they are always effectively 1:1.

I need to check the math on that but that's what my intuition tells me, which would mean a 20% size is always correct.

>> No.52226514

>>52226486
depends to how close you are to expire once the Implied vol dies down to a certain extent the moves in the price completely take over any theta decay, but thats mainly for very near expirey. if youre right in direction with that you can get 20% just in volatility and demand alone an doubles are fairly easy but once the price heads towards the target the it drops back down suddenly and youre left with something slightly less positive but still a bit of green

Yes but the edge isn't implied in the greeks, it's in something you know about the market that isn't priced in. I'm talking about the greeks and the implied chance to win based on those alone. I don't see how else you could get a chance of success unless you just want to swag something.

>>52226514
I'm just talking about at the time the option is purchased, what the chance of winning is at that moment. It changes minute to minute but the decision on sizing is made when you buy or write the option.
