Bulls really are the coomers of the investing world. They have to coom constantly. Line MUST go up, no matter what. They don't care if we have record inflation, they NEED the up line, they need the infinite QE and 0% interest rates. They'd do anything for one more hit of green, and they'll never sell because line ALWAYS goes up.
I'm here to tell them that their cooming days are over. Its time to go cold turkey and touch some fucking grass, mumu.

This is what they want say in theory, but clearly it's not true. (just look at Fed interest rates under Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden).

Obama got literally two straight terms of 0% interst money creation cocaine to pump up the economy. Fed has certainly not been easy on Biden which does break the mold so maybe it's true again, or maybe just the situation is so damn fucked that they had to do it anyway to prevent total and complete hyperinflation of US dollar.

The funniest thing about today's presser is Jerome wouldn't even have had occasion to spout giga hawkish rhetoric except that every fucking boomer in the room kept asking him leading questions trying to goose him into saying something dovish to pump the markets for midterms / save their 401ks. He had to breathe fire on those cunts to put them in their place. If they'd just asked him softball questions/talked shop with him he would have just gone over the numbers, said nothing scary and then markets would have taken the dovish press release as gospel and pumped hard. Fucking hilarious watching these dem reporters dig their own grave with their trick questions. And that faggot who lied about the market reaction to powell's comments gets dunce of the year, yeah, tell daddy MID CONFERENCE that the stock market is retard pumping off his remarks, that definitely won't elicit any hawkish rhetoric or anything.

I have some incredibly basic questions about futures, the answers to which are bafflingly nonexistent anywhere on the fucking internet. Can someone help me?

My questions are specifically about stock index futures. Let's just say /ES. So I understand a futures contract is an agreement to buy an asset at a specific price on a specific date. So if you enter into a corn futures contract, you are agreeing to buy corn at X price in the future. My question is, for a /ES contract, WHAT FUCKING PRICE ARE YOU AGREEING TO BUY AT. I understand the notional value of the contract, which is the contract size times the CURRENT MARKET VALUE, but disregarding the notional value of the contract, what price is specified in the contract itself?

And my other question is, when you open up your brokerage and you go to /ES and you click "Buy," is it creating a brand new contract from scratch? Or are you buying an existing contract? Or what? And either way, what is the price specified in the contract? When I buy, am I just agreeing to buy 50 shares of the S&P 500 at the end of the quarter at whatever the price is at that instant?

Humans are so fucking horrible at explaining things. I swear to christ, once a person learns something, they become incapable of passing the knowledge on. I am losing my mind trying to find answers to these incredibly basic fucking questions.

I think you can find out what you're asking on the /ES contract's specs page under Settlement Procedures: https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/equities/sp/e-mini-sandp500.contractSpecs.html

They calculate what the S&P 500 is on/at the end of the contract's expiration date. That index is calculated Wikipedia's explanation for how that's calculated is decent: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%26P_500#Index_value_calculation

So essentially, there is no price specified in the contract itself, but rather, it settles to whatever the market value of the S&P 500 is on the expiration date? But how does that make any sense? Why is it called a "futures contract" when you are not agreeing on a price ahead of time? LIke corn futures make intuitive sense; the two parties of the contract agree on a price ahead of time to reduce risk and uncertainty. The same evidently cannot be said of an /ES contract. An /ES contract shouldn't be called a futures contract at all, but rather, just "a commitment to place a market order on a specified date." It just doesn't make any sense to me so I feel like I must be missing something.

Financial settlmenet is nothing fancy or unusual. The vast majority of physical commodities are financially settled by most brokerages. That doesn't change the fact that physical commodity contracts have a price specified in the contract itself, and thus, serve to mitigate risk and uncertainty. Those contracts have utility. /ES contracts have literally no discernible purpose that I can see. They don't mitigate risk or do jack shit because they settle at the market price on the date of expiration, so I just don't fucking get it. I kind of understand the utility in the sense that you can't actually buy "shares" of the S&P 500, so a /ES contract essentially serves as a proxy for "shares" of the index. But I don't understand why in the fuck it's called a "futures contract." It lacks a forward price, which is one of the fundamental specifications of EVERY other futures contract.

That enables traders throughout the world to continuously weigh in on the strength or weakness of US equities. I highly doubt I'm ever going to get an answer to the settlement price question unless I talk to a college professor of finance, but while I have you here, do you happen to know the answer my other question? Namely, when you click "buy" or "sell" in your brokerage when trading futures (lean hogs or /ES or anything else), are you bringing a new contract into existence, or entering into an existing one? Is there like a finite quantity of contracts created at the start of each quarter?

I have done some back of the napkin math but if you buy stocks above SPY 320 level then you are a literally throwing money away. You are better of getting investment grade bonds.

Uh, I think I answered that one. Read the Settlement Procedures section of the Contract Spec I linked: https://www.cmegroup.com/confluence/display/EPICSANDBOX/E-Mini+Standard+and+Poors+500+Futures

And no, the number of contracts isn't finite. Just like when you trade options on a stock, there may be a trader or market maker on the other side of the trade who may or may not already have the contract in question. They'll just have orders sitting open at either a bid price or an ask price then, once you hit that price, the CBOE/CME/whatever other exchange does it shit. This and settlement time are also when clearinghouses do their shit. And because I know you're going to start asking about that, I'll just refer you to Investopedia for everything else: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/clearinghouse.asp

The answer is both. Market makers know how many actual people hold contracts and contracts are created and destroyed in real time based on traders opening and closing positions. That's what open interest is. Contracts are just positions, they're entirely virtual and not at all like stock which has a specific supply and has to be issued.

That contract/transaction is, like, "I will give you $1234 now and you will give me the dollar value of 1 share of the S&P 1234 as of the end of November". If you hold that contract and the S&P 1234 drops to $1000, you paid $1234 for something that gets you $1000 a month later.

If you hold a dividend stock for 60 days before/after, you get a qualified dividend. There are a few exceptions, but that's the general rule.
Harvesting divvies can be a decent a way to reduce your taxable income to that sweet 15% rate instead of the 24/32% rate you'd likely otherwise be hitting.

Buy stocks with high yield on margin, then sell covered calls like 10% OTM. Then after the ex-div date, the stock will drop by that dividend amount and you can sell it for a short term loss. This will offset other short term gains and leaves you with just a qualified dividend.
If the call gets exercised early you might miss the dividend payment, but in the rare case that happens it's a quick 10% profit anyway.

It's probably not worth the effort, but I made some money doing this on margin last year when margin rates were 1.5% in interactive brokers.

I think I might finally fucking get it... I think the problem is not that I was misunderstanding index futures, but that I was misunderstanding commodity futures. So I'm guessing even commodity futures actually don't have a settlement price specified at inception of the contract, but rather, you buy the contract now for a price based on the current market price, and comoddity futures, too, are held until expiration if you're hedging. So you don't hedge by picking the settlement price; you hedge by picking the notional price you pay for the contract itself, by jumping in whenever you think the market price is fitting for your purposes. I had it backwards, I thought the settlement price was fixed and the notional price is what you're guarding against, when in reality, the notional price (that you paid) is fixed and the settlement price is what you're guarding against.

Ok thanks bros, sorry I came in so hot into this thread

But if you waved a wand and everyone was suddenly 10% more productive or took up some extra shifts on the weekend, you'd see inflation plummet due to increased supply of goods and services. More homes built, more haircuts done, more goods chasing the same number of dollars.
