Update: It's not just NS2: according to Reuters, Nord Stream AG, the operator of the Nord Stream 1 undersea gas pipeline from Russia to Germany, said Monday it was looking into causes of a drop in pressure in the pipeline.

"Tonight, dispatchers from the Nord Stream 1 control centre recorded a pressure drop on both branches of the gas pipeline," it said in a statement. "The reasons are being clarified."

Operation Ivy Bells....in October 1971, the United States sent the purpose-modified submarine USS Halibut deep into the Sea of Okhotsk. Funds for the project were diverted secretly from the deep-submergence rescue vehicle (DSRV) program, and the modified submarines were shown with fake DSRV simulators attached to them. These were early diver lockouts. US Navy Divers working from Halibut found the cable in 400 feet (120 m) of water and installed a 20-foot (6.1 m) long device, which wrapped around the cable without piercing its casing and recorded all communications made over it. The large recording device was designed to detach if the cable was raised for repair.

The tapping of the Soviet naval cable was so secret that most sailors involved did not have the security clearance needed to know about it. A cover story was thus created to disguise the actual mission: it was claimed that the spy submarines were sent to the Soviet naval range in the Sea of Okhotsk to recover the Soviet SS-N-12 Sandbox supersonic anti-ship missile (AShM) debris so that countermeasures could be developed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Ivy_Bells

>how will this leak make things any worse?
it is a Baltic sea. which means NS1 and 2 will not be repaired until spring. it is too cold and weather is not favorable. up until now germany had always an option to turn on NS2. in case or real emergency. now that option is one. and there will not be enough gas to last until spring. also, there is a problem with pressure. to extract gas from storage you have to put a pressure in storage. up until now russia (through NS 1 and 2) had provided pressure. there will be problem with extraction from storage.

Also, there is a problem with quality in gas. russian gas is pure. some other producers have impurity's. which is a problem when it is burned. for example, german chemical industry is configured to work with russian gas.

They were both still pressurised tho.
Those pipelines are designed to always be pressurised 24/7/365 - which is why NS2 was pressurised despite not being in use. Usually a tiny section would be emptied (and the gas released collected) by need of repair. The consequences of the pressure in both basically dropping to null are unpredictable. It also suggests massive damage/breach, or Russians talking shit again.

You don't need to send submarines, nor anything else, to blow it up. When you got an undersea pipeline at 500m depth and you let the internal pressure drop low enough, water pressure will take care of crushing the rest for you. It's probably accidental/Russians being retarded and letting the pressure drop too low when trying to shut off the Germans. Or they could easily fuxor it themselves deliberately, just by emptying it and watching the pipeline implode like a coke can under a tyre truck. tldr, regardless who/what happened, it was Ivan.
