If you're older it may be the only way for them (in their minds) to communicate with you. When I graduated college I dropped all socials except for LinkedIn. Most of my friends didn't go to college so they never thought LinkedIn would be any value (it's not, but HR/recruiters don't even check resumes anymore they just check LinkedIn). They all took it as me cutting ties with them despite every one of them having my cell number.
