SEL is very overrated and borders on being an NPC-tier anime (not as much as NGE though). Haibane Renmei (made by the same guy who made SEL) absolutely destroys it.

Wrong, Lain is good and incapsulates really well some of the fears of the period when it was released. Haibane Renmei is also quite good, but for different reasons, also it is indeed a work of ABe (based on some stuff he made years prior), he didn't do as much in Lain as he was mainly the character designer for that (though he still talked a lot with Konaka).
ABe also worked on the extremely nihilistic Texhnolyze (once again as character designer) and that's another pretty good show. In general you cannot really go wrong with stuff he's related to, well except Niea_7 which I found kinda disappointing back when I watched it.

It is necessarily true if we assume consciousness is a fundamental property of the universe, as is understood in the eastern thought.

A rock is conscious, albeit the complexity of its consciousness is infintesimal, as information cannot propagate very well within the system that we call "rock". Human is more conscious than a rock, as its nervous system is very complex in comparison, allowing for more information transfer within. Finally, internet can be thought as a amalgamate of all the units of consciousness (humans) connected to it. Now that doesn't grant it any magical properties, and to say it's self-aware would be a stretch in my worthless opinion. Still fun to ponder.
