Anon hope you're posting in this thread too, would appreciate talking to an actual software engineer about these things.

I'm not a bonafide software engineer, just listing off things i know people in finance use.
>You mean "become a script kiddie with big data" (and there's nothing wrong with that, just don't mistake learning how to use Tensorflow as an end user with the actual knowledge of machine learning, which requires at minimum a master's degree in computer science with a specific focus on machine learning, and much more preferably a PhD).
Yes too true lol you cannot just google tensorflow and become an expert in linear algebra, network topography, etc over a few weeks. The kind of multi-layered Neural Networks that are used on wall street require software/math/physics/data science PhD's

What kind of non-SQL databases are used for big data?

I know a guy who worked for an option dealer (market maker) and his job application was simply 1) know finance and 2) know how to use SQL for working with "big data"

There are a multitude of databases for big data, and all of them fall under the umbrella of "NoSQL databases" -- so literally, anything but SQL. MongoDB, DynamoDB, etc. Big data is best handled by distributed databases without a set schema, making SQL the antithesis of what you would want to use. It's possible the guy you mentioned just thinks 100k rows of data is "big data" simply because you wouldn't use Excel for it.

Oh I see, so "big data" databases are usually non-relational databases? Thank you for clarifying this. SQL is used for non-big data then, got it. I have toyed around with MySQL on DBeaver with some financial data/AirDNA data (for analyzing rental properties I own) and MySQL is RIDICULOUSLY simple to use.

I am a big fan of how MySQL allows your to manipulate data tables with such ease. The simple sentential syntax of MySQL makes me feel a lot more comfortable than I thought I'd be when using a langauge like SQL (as a non-CS guy)

Yeah, non-relational. When we talk about "big data," typically you're talking about processing semi-unstructured data to get general insights about it, whereas a relational database is suited for a precisely defined schema for very unform data, and for performing very precise queries on that data which yield exact answers. All that said, yes, SQL and relational databases are very easy to use. With a NoSQL database, you run into all kinds of unique challenges with indexing and running queries on non-uniform data stored across distributed servers etc. You avoid all that with SQL, but SQL is only suited for clean data, and not too much of it because relational databases typically aren't run on a distributed architecture, so if you start getting into 100s of millions of rows, you run into performance problems.

Thank you! This explanation makes a lot of sense. The former is exactly what I do: I get mostly structured data in some CSV file and manipulate it on DBeaver using MySQL as a language. I really appreciate your clarification.

>You avoid all that with SQL, but SQL is only suited for clean data, and not too much of it because relational databases typically aren't run on a distributed architecture, so if you start getting into 100s of millions of rows, you run into performance problems.

Thank you again, this makes for a decent segue into my next question: what exactly do you use to determine the "cleanliness" of data that you want to analyze or manipulate?

You say that "SQL is only suited for clean data" but obviously how "clean" a data is depends on a few things. Would you say that getting un-normalized data in a CSV file (like pic related, its a screenshot of the CSV file I played around with on DBeaver using MySQL) is still considered "clean"?

What you're saying makes me wonder just how unstructured "big data" looks like. Like when you are working with "Big data", what is a clear hallmark(s) of data that are totally unstructured, a type of data that you know immediately you'd need to use a NoSQL database for.

Any good examples of rough, non-normalized and unstructured data that NoSQL databases use?

Again youre awesome i appreciate your post

I used the word "clean," but that maybe isn't the best word. I'll try to explain. When I said "clean data," I guess what I probably should have said is "data with a uniform schema," because cleanliness is something sort of different; Data with a uniform schema can be unclean too. So for example, suppose you received a bunch of rows of data, and the file was "uniform" in the sense that every row had the same columns (so a well-defined) schema. And suppose one of the columns was a numerical column, like "property value" or whatever, and suppose some rows had a plain numerical value for their property value, and other rows had the property value in quotation marks. And some rows had a number with commas ("425,000") and others didn't ("425000"). Those would be instances of dirty data.

The screenshot you provided, I would say is VERY clean if that's representative of the whole file.

Big data is often a gigantic dataset assembled from multiple sources; so it's going to contain rows with different columns, etc, and the process of processing, studying, querying, and analyzing that data is going to involve a lot of very non-SQL-like tasks, like you're going to be running the data through some kind of sanitization to deal with the types of uncleanliness I described above, you're going to be reconciling the different schemas, deciding which columns are equivalent to each other, maybe with the help of machine learning and statistics. And at the end of all of it, you're still going to have a shitload of non-perfect data, and your queries are going to yield rough insights and correlations rather than precise answers and calculations.

A big dataset can be clean too, but often isn't.

comment too long, will explain an example next post

cont.

An example of a big data dataset could be tons of things, like for example, idk, shopping records from multiple ecommerce websites who all use slightly different schemas, or the records of how the users click around the website(s); so we're talking every click, every mouse movement, every page navigation being logged into a NoSQL database. Maybe the dataset contains records of interactions from over a period of time when the website changed structure too, so you've got inconsistencies in the data, interactions with pages that didn't exist before or pages that were replaced with a slightly different page or had their UI adjusted. Just a random example made up in my head.

The tools are simply very powerful now. You can through shitloads of parallelized compute ar relatively large data without doing anything goofy now.

There are shitloads of companys that dont have web scale data and or arent dealing with biggish streaming data but are using web scale / biggish streaming data tools.

There's also lots of nosql being used when sql would be better, and vice versa.

Finally, there are lots of tool to query noql/doc stores with sql syntax.

If they can find any of their nuclear missiles they probably can't launch, if they can launch they probably can't be guided properly. The most feasible way for the war to escalate is for a truck to deliver a nuclear bomb to a target city, but the Russians can't keep roads clear enough to guarantee delivery.

How can the money alone cause inflation though. Dude think about what you are saying. Printing money itself isnt raising inflation. Its spending it on too few goods. They dont exist outside one another. If you add a 0 to everyones bank account that doesnt automatically create inflation unless people all go out and buy stuff with it. The money has to be moving to supplies to get inflation. The CPI is factoring in that stuff. Money supply itself doesnt create inflation.

It doesnt really. Why is the USD at aths then? Actual printing of money would devalue it. But airdropping it via low interest rates doensnt make me pay more for buying lentils. My $1.5 can still get me the exact same bag of lentils. If I triple the money supply but leave it in a bank account that cant be loaned out by the bank. There isnt any inflation caused by it. Inflation is too much money chasing too few goods. If its not chasing anything then its not inflation.
>>51473871
>You think that same house is still gonna cost 250k?
If people arent buying houses then yes it does. Things dont appreciate on their own, they appreciate via demand. If they all go out and buy then yeah the houses will rise in price. But if no one does then no the houses stay the same.

so UPRO is a fucking scam for poor people who can't afford to play SPY huh? There is no liquidity to trade options and the market makers don't move the bid/ask like SPY. What a scam. Lesson learned.

Nobody here understands shit about how the money system functions, to be honest.

>>51473954

Calling printed money new debt implies they will have to un-print the money in the future. Q: What happens if they don't? A: The purchasing power taken from savers and given to government stays taken is what.

>If you add a 0 to everyones bank account that doesnt automatically create inflation unless people all go out and buy stuff with it.
You're dead wrong right there.
>The money has to be moving to supplies to get inflation.
Prices adjust mostly to expectations and potentials.
Retailers will now wait until the new money already has entered their store to raise prices.
They need to rise the prices beforehand because they will never be able to restock their shelves with unadjusted prices.
This is not a charity, ffs.
>Money supply itself doesnt create inflation.
