If you go to school for "mechanical engineering" is that all you can do? It's my senior year for business analytics & InfoSys right now and this summer I interned at a fortune 500 medical company doing marketing.

I got off to a rough start as fresh grad, making $42k in 2012. Now I make $120K, so a good improvement and not bad all things considered. But I wish I had studied almost anything else, the effort/pay ratio for ME is so laughably low. And I failed to develop social skills because I went to and engineering school and continued to be a socially awkward nerd through my mid 20s.

Starting ME salary is $74k right now. I'm right at 5 years in and make $120k with full WFH, started at $65k. I make an additional $25k a year or so moonlighting, and I think my business is about to get bought, so there is that.

ME isn't so bad really. Hopefully the green energy scam continues, I'm making bank off of this stuff.

I worked at an engineering firm as a IT person. From what I understand the core problem is that the senior engineers would never retire - so you have guys who are at their post for 20 -30 years and would never give up their position or knowledge.

So you get these poor graduates who have no chance of moving into a senior position, with low pay and shitty working conditions (constantly out of state or at a jobsite). Why the fuck you would you do mechanical engineering bros?

>> No.51384844

>>51384807
This was correct in 2019 or so. Covid cleared out a shit load of boomers (they retired mostly). But yeah, they wouldn't share knowledge or retire. $145k a year and couldn't rotate a PDF kek. I actually knew one who would print out his emails to read them, no lie. It's definitely better now.

>> No.51384883

>>51384807
add on top of that that once they actually do retire, their position is terminated and they instead delegate all of their duties to a lower ranked employee for no increase in pay
