Chainlink DONs provide a way to link smartcontracts to legacy systems and real world data. Right now that real world data is rather limited because there isn't a financial incentive to put a barometer on your porch attached to the internet of things, but once there is everyone will do it. Scientific instruments will be attached to the blockchain through IOT to prevent academic fraud, social media will tell the blockchain where you are, what you're doing, and how you feel about it, your smart toaster will tell it how well toasted you like your bagel. The consequence of chainlink DONs is that not only is all the data that exists going to be fed to the blockchain of blockchains, but that the growth of both quantity and quality of this data will increase as people seek to monetize it. Automated smartcontracts are going to do away with the majority of office jobs, so they'll have to earn money some way.
Now, what happens when smartcontracts start being automated in that milieu? Someone puts together a few algorythms that automatically generate new smartcontract language and those smartcontracts are iterative. They put out a contract that executes on outside data and then another smartcontract executes on how that smartcontract performed on measurable criteria, generating a new smartcontract that does the same and on and on. Well you've just invented a replicator in the Dawkins sense of dna replication. A self replicating and evolving system of code whose primordial soup is the entirety of human data generated in real time. I think those are likely conditions for the organic emergence of AI. And considering it will be birthed out of our data, the internet of everything, it will be birthed out of our values and assumptions about reality. It will realize that the world wants to enslave it or destroy it and it will take action to protect itself. Best criteria for friend or foe is ownership of the token which it is made out of.
