How does taxes work in relation to exercising call options? Let's say you buy leaps on SoxL (or siga if you prefer) at 10. You hold the leaps until 2023/2024 and soxl is back to 35 or something. What happens when you exercise those calls? What happens when you don't have enough capital and need to transfer additional funds into your account to exercise or if you sell to close some of your deep in the money calls to have enough cash to exercise the remaining ones. If you're exercising calls it's just like buying stocks. I'm not from US so I can't give you specifics but it's probably just the broker fees you need to pay there.

If you're selling the calls that would be a taxable event if you made profit on them. I imagine if you held them for more than a year then it would be long term capital gains and if it was held less than a year short term capital gains.

What strikes me as interesting (though not necessarily a confirmation of a happening) is that a lot of contracts are taken out for October 12th. This is the first expiry after Thanksgiving, but it seems the market is pricing in a large increase in volatility around that date, since calls have a huge premium at that time

Yes. That's kinda how everyone gets into selling. Start with defined risk, move to double defined risk (iron condors), get frustrated with how little they move, then look into how to make naked puts work.

Keep position sizes small. Like 1% of your portfolio. You'll be fine regardless at that point. If you need more info on naked options, tastytrade has done an enormous number of studies on them. Follow their method exactly until you understand everything a bit better. Kind of like learning a multiplayer video game, learn the meta, learn why the meta is the meta, then once you have a firm understanding, get creative.

I really am a fan of the derivatives market even though I'm just getting started, but theres always much more to learn. Having defined risk is really attractive, since position sizing and risk management seem to be key for longterm success. But by the same token, defined risk means certain things are priced into eg the options market so it can be difficult to develop an edge.
Like I mentioned much earlier, a straddle's breakeven cam be used to see where the market expects a price to move, so selling a CC beyond the upper value means you should never get called away the caveat here is that premiums/volume/liquidity is low (eg $0.05 or $0.10 per contract for a $20 stock)

I find a ticker that I would like to own and would be comfortable holding long-term. I sell a put. Eventually I'm assigned. I repeat the process. Now I have two hundred shares (I normally sell more than one put but I'm trying to keep it simple). I sell one covered call, but I leave the other one hundred shares alone in case the price spikes. Basically I always obtain shares in multiples of 100 and I sell CC on half. I sell puts on red days and sell covered calls on green days. Oh, and of my shares get called away I reevaluate the ticker and decide if I want to sell puts again. Sometimes you won't want to.

Let's say I sold one contract for LOVE at 25p with an expiry of 9/16 this past Friday afternoon. As you can see, the bid and ask are 15 and 25, respectfully.
