When you obsessively research it as much as I did over the years, it becomes clear that the Chinese government, aka CCP, is involved.
It was intended as a financial weapon to attack the USD's hegemony as the reserve currency. Have you noticed how China has seemingly been able to protect its own people from BTC while orchestrating the biggest wealth transfer? China mines and hodl a lot more BTC that one thinks.
The timing of BTC's release also coincided with Xi Jinping's rise to power. Prior to him taking the helm, he was involved in some high level projects that he gained a reputation as a shrewd technologist.
Hal, Sergey, Nick were probably recruits to the project and Vitalik and the 2nd gen crypto dudes were recruited via Cicada 3301.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was a data collection agency looking to further enable mass financial surveillance. Something with less privacy than a credit card certainly is enticing to those looking to collect your data and then sell it to those who will fuck you with it in the future.
