How is my seed phrase able to recover all of my individual wallets whereas on MEW for exampe, my seed phrase would only recover my ethereum wallet, where as on the ledger I can recover each wallet (btc, ltc, vtc, neo, etc) with just one seed, how is this possible?

i wonder the same

You seed phrase is the password to generate those wallets dummy

its like cryptography

So does the wallet generate each address/private key for each individual wallet on the device set up regardless of whether or not the wallet/app is on the device itself?

I want to know this too. I just got a ledger and was planning on using it for MEW, bitcoin, and vertcoin. I was wondering how the one seed would restore all wallets if I lost the ledger.

Just test it goddamn it. But here are my thoughts after having played around.
>type seed into btc wallets like electronum
No result empty
>type into ledger
All fine
>seed key in mew
All dandy just had to turn a few pages to get to adress

The only thing the device really stores is the seed and the apps.

The Apps tell it how to create crypto keys for a specific network.

It creates those keys on the fly based on the seed, it always creates the same keys given the same seed.

probably the way it works is the random seed is paired (cryptographically) with a constant associated with a wallet category to generate "unique" random values per wallet. otherwise it's likely an attack vector: make a stupid coin with a stupid wallet that leaks bits and get people to use it

I fucking hope you havent typed your seed into anything on your computer. Congrats you might as well have not bought a hardware wallet.
