I am pretty sure that entry level doctors in the UK make less money than the people stocking shelves at my local Walmart. The local Wallyworld is hiring people at $18 / hr for that, or $36k a year. According to below, beginning salaries for britbong doctors starts at £29,384, $33.7 k USD at current exchange rates. Granted the doctor wage will go up a fair bit as they get experience.

You're on the right path if you're at Google. You need to learn the skills that big companies need. Building working software isn't good enough. You have to know how to design and build really robust, scalable, well-designed systems. Those skills aren't worth much to tiny companies that work on small data, pleasing a small customer base. If you have these skills, your decisions can be leveraged at large scale where it's a no-brainer for a large company to pay you a generous compensation.

With understanding and experience building reliable, scaling, and maintainable systems you become invaluable to companies. After you have the technical chops, then it's about people problems.
