You do contribute. In any investment you are assuming risk. That's worth something and gives way to the risk reward relationship. You make those returns and the world is telling you thanks for holding this risk.
In some investments there is capital sharing as well. When you hold stock you are being compensated for making your capital available to the company. It's similar to getting interest as a lender.
