There's probably two things that are going on
One is that the boomer has the stereotypical "I know what I got" mentality hoping to fleece some retard so he can brag about his salemanship to his drinking buddies.
Two is that his wife told him to get rid of those junk rocks he just has lying around and he doesn't want to so he overprices the hell out of them to keep them from selling.

Reminds me of an interaction I saw at my LCS the other day:
>A guy in his 30s walks in
>looks to be in a hurry
>Goes right up to the dealer
>Sir I have a full album of 1959-2008 Memorial Cents, How much will you pay for this?
>Dealer says he'll buy the album for $2.50 and give face value for the pennies
>Customer looks slightly irritated
>Pulls out a Merc Dime from his pocket
>I also have this 1943 Dime, how much would you pay for this?
>Dealer offers to pay $1.50 for the dime
>Customer freaks out
>B-but mine weighs 2.3 grams and they're supposed to weigh 2.5 grams
>I have a rare underweight planchet error
>Dealer tells him that the missing 0.2 grams is just normal wear
>Customer storms off while the dealer is still talking
I honestly wonder if some coin dealers get into running shops because they like the drama.
>The plated 'American Mint' plated Morgan rounds were especially cringe.
I always wonder who exactly falls for this sort of shit when actual Morgans aren't much more expensive than these knock-offs. I always assumed they just scammed naive dementia patients, so it's weird to hear about someone who's apparently an actual collector having some.
Another interesting side note is that the American Mint did make some nice 20 gram Silver coins under the name of Liberia that you can occasionally find at okay prices.

I hit a bunch of of antique stores/thrift stores/junk stores today to poke around and I found nothing but plated silver. I'd imagine all the stores pick out the sterling before it has a chance to hit the floor for sale.

The old guys at my LCS actually enjoy the heck out of telling their fellow boomers that their collections are shit-tier and that they won't get half of what they're trying to sell them for. They do it in the nicest, most passive-aggressive way possible so the would-be sellers can't get angry without looking like total dicks. When they waddle out in a huff after declaring they won't stand to be "cheated" because they "know-wadda-got", all of the workers and store regulars have us a good hearty kek.

I want to mint coins in the near future, if anybody has tips on how to make it work I'd be glad to read them.

I have a few k worth of gold ingots and a milling machine on the way, I still need to get a torch and build a blank punching set, a project I will focus on in the next few weeks. My first goal is to make blanks that have a repetable weight, the minting part is not as important. I guess I'll give the chinks 50€ to get one of those cheap drum tumblers too so that they're shiny.

When I have blanks, I'll either be a cuck and purchase custom dies or find a way to engrave steel myself, and with the press I'll use to punch the blanks, I'll mint the first coins too.

My reasoning is that small coins with a small premium are
> liquid
> hard to contrefeit (if they're thin and worth less than $100, good contrefeits won't be worth it)
> good for normies who can't wait to have 1-5k and buy something with a low prenium
> look good like a medieval coin hoard vs small ingot worth 5k
> don't raise suspicions from IRS and the like, they're just collectibles
> I want to spread some kind of propaganda against the coming dystopia of hyperinflation and cashless society

I guess the only doubt I have is that in the end I'm throwing money at gear to turn gold into gold (I'll do silver too when I can get some ingots I can scrap without horrendeous preniums)

Picrel some crappy design ideas, I keep the more advanced ones until I have some real prototype to show. My theme is really the mark of the beast, and giving back to Caesar what is his (his debased denarii/paper money) to trade with sound currency. I'd love to do low-prenium, artisanal meme-rounds if there's demand in the future as well.

>this employee, who we call Boss Hog (because he's a 300 pound cinderblock wall of a man) goes over to the boomer, who is grinning smugly like he just got done pink-n-stinking Sasha Grey in the alley behind the store
>"How can I help yo-"
>Boss Hog can't even finish before the boomer unzips his black pouch and literally dumps the contents on the counter
>the employee talking to me visibly winces, concerned about the counter-top glass
>from where I'm standing, they look like a shitload of 1 ounce and smaller gold coins, as well as a bunch of Lincoln pennies
>the boomer squeals "What can ah get for these bad boys?" loud enough for the entire store to hear
>"That depends, sir. Let's take a look at what they ar-"
>"I ALREADY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE, DID MAH HOMEWORK SO I KNOW WHAT THEY'RE WORTH!"
>I can faintly hear the store's owner, Old Terry, in the back office going "Oh shit, we got another one."
>Boss Hog, though annoyed, is still trying to be professional
>"That's good to know, sir, but I still need to look at them myself. It's store policy. Also, I don't want to give you less than they're worth."
>that last sentence was obviously tacked on to placate the boomer and convince him to be reasonable
>"Ahh okay, if it's policy."
>Boss Hogg starts picking up the gold-colored coins, sighing to himself and rolling his eyes as he examines them with his loop, and setting them aside in a pile, except for two

Scrapanon for whatever reason lies about the cost and/or time associated with his hobby. Like you had noticed, finding sterling for spot let alone 80%-90% under spot is very rare. It takes a lot time finding the stuff. And to collect kgs of it in a reasonable amount of time is at least a part time job. Also, the bars he is having refined would be tough to sell at spot. All in all, he is not likely saving money on silver by refining sterling. For anyone spending a few hours per week looking for sterling, you absolutely won’t be refine bars for under spot.

Yeah auctions and estate sales are probably your best bet, most Goodwill and Salvation army shops sort out the good stuff to sell online but sometimes they miss good PMs, it depends on the management but you're probably better off just sticking to estate liquidations. I get the scrap refined at Prospector's Gold and Gems, they're pretty close to me so I drop off and pick up in person, but anyone can send scrap and get bars returned. if you want to travel to Japan, no chance to get the 2,000 Yen note. It's excessively rare due to how Japan handles their notes.
2,000 Yen notes are mostly sent out to foreign banks as exchange money. I had one of those notes with me when I went for the first time and people in uni called the room together "look, the gaijin has a 2,000 yen note!". They know it exists, but notes in Japan once they get creased are usually burned and replaced because the whole country runs on vending machines which need pristine bills to run smoothly.
The other three should be easily gettable.

$18.40 face in constitutional is a good addition to the pile, did you get any older quarters or are they all Washingtons? And I assume it was an estate auction? Sales with set prices and auctions each have their strengths and weaknesses, I probably prefer being an early bird at a sale because sometimes you'll have to wait hours for what you want at an auction, though the wait can pay off really well if there aren't many people at the auction or no one else wants what you do. Years ago I attended an auction of a jeweler and coin collector, no one cared about the foreign silver so I bought boxes full of the stuff for $2 to $4 per box, it was awesome. Anyway it seems like you're doing it right, good luck at future sales and always keep an eye open for cheap sterling.

You claimed 80% lots of times. After all in costs of refining and shipping and taxes, you would have to be getting sterling at 80-90% under spot to have a $10 per oz price. Right there shows you are lying. If it was possible to refine sterling and make 100%+ profit, people would be doing it as a full time job cutting out all the hobby types that spend only a couple hours per week doing it as you claim. Right there shows you are lying. If you could buy a comex bar for spot, chop it up, have it refined and sell it on eBay for $35 per oz, you could make a living on this. You can’t. You can screenshot a $35 per oz sell price one time, but that is not an average sell price. You are lying. I’ve been to plenty of estate sales. Most items are so overpriced it’s comical. If it was possible to make a 100% profit buying sterling on the worlds largest online auction site, people would do it full time employing teams of people to scoop it up before some casual like yourself. Your seething midwit cope is off the charts. I've never once claimed a total average of 80-90% under spot, some individual deals are that good or better but the average is a bit under $10/oz, not $2/oz. I can scoop deals on eBay because I'm much savvier and more knowledgeable than you, take pic for example. Top lot yielded 360g, so with tax it wasn't a great deal. Middle yielded 206g, and the bottom contained 10 marked STERLING pieces weighing 310g. I get gobs of silver off eBay all the time. Also I haven't sold any of my refined bullion, just posted caps of what others sell, if you investigate some of the sellers you can see that they are scrappers themselves and do exactly what you suggest; they buy cheapies, get it refined then sell bars for a tidy premium.

Shipping and refining isn’t cheap. So at the end of the day your saving, what? $1 per oz. Not worth it. It’s pathetic. You aren’t the only one aware of the fact that some pieces on eBay are mislabeled. There would be too much competition and the price would be bid up for you to do this casually. See >>51273167 for the pair of .835 silver dishes, you can see the mark pretty clearly in the center. The eBay screenshots show the prices paid, which is one of the bugs up your ass. The silverware set is Towle's 1931 "Symphony" pattern, marked sterling of course.

Let’s say hypothetically it becomes illegal to own gold and silver. How do you trade your gold on the black market, can you paint me a picture/give me a diagram of what that’s going to be like?

Hard mode: in addition to gold and silver being made illegal, we have also converted to a cashless society with centralized digital currencies and all money transactions are tracked.

There is no reason to believe what you guys are doing here won’t be illegal, you are literally trying to undermine the power of a corrupt government and monetary system right as it is potentially headed to war which will encourage extrajudicial power. There is precedent even for the confiscation of gold. How does precious metals work out for you in the worst case scenario?

the precedent for gold being confiscated was it was THE money then. there's no reason for them to confiscate it now because it is not the money and a paltry amount a small group of people have is not comparable to the amount people were hoarding back then

Um...illegally. That's why it's called the "black" market. This is also the primary reason I stack. Not because I expect silver to moon in the future, but because I expect I, a bad goy, will at some point in the future will only be able to purchase goods or services "illegally". It's clear that TPTB are steering everyone towards a cashless society. What Trudeau did to the truckers and their supporters was a big wake up call for me. I'm the type of person who's bank account will be shut down by big daddy government. I'm hoping my stack will afford me some purchasing power after my social credit score is in the negative numbers.

These are my thoughts exactly. I'm looking into taking some different classes at a nearby trade school. I'm hoping to develop at least one manual skill that I can fall back onto when the economy fully shits the bed. At the very least, I'd be able to save money for myself and my family by fixing our shit when it breaks.

Most definitely, besides friends and family, I'm hoping that with enough experience I can do side gigs or even start my own business. A big apeal was being able to work under the table and possibly take PMs or Monero as payment.
Check out G3 grants, not sure if they cover part time classes though But I qualified because I didn't get financial aid or loans. It's a smart move to learn a skill if you don't need to, just increasing your knowledge is valuable.
