The chip shortage was exacerbated by everyone and their brother buying GPUs to mine certain cryptocurrencies with (often ETH), which created a huge demand above and beyond the target audience for said hardware (PC gamers). Obviously, if a large chunk of that demand disappears (and miners start selling off their now-useless GPUs), the supply will outstrip the demand generated by the target audience, and prices will fall.
